A science teacher since 2008 and exam board assessor (GCSE & Alevel) I bring all my experience together to create fun educational resources that can be easily taught to any class. AQA A level Biology unit 1 - Biological Molecules specification points 3.1.2 Carbohydrates - Monosaccharides & disaccharides. Lesson 2 of Biological molecules. Complete lesson ready to use, just download, print and go! Designed for teachers to deliver (specialist and non-specialists) but I have found more & more students need to access resources independently so my lessons are structured in a way that students can navigate for remote learning or to catch up on missed content. Can also be used for a flipped learning approach. This fun lesson continues the unit ‘Biological molecules’ in a fun way to ease the transition to A’level. I find that students often struggle with this unit so have change my approach over time to better engage (and retain) everyone. Lesson contains: Concise learning objectives - referred to through the lesson to check learning has occurred. Emphasis on structure of glucose - I use molymods to model alpha and beta glucose but the lesson will work without these if you don’t have them. Learn the three monosaccharides specified in the spec. A range of different challenges to develop understanding and familiarity with the content. Understanding the formation of glycosidic bonds and move onto the formation of disaccharides. Final activity is a question to give students the opportunity to apply there learning from the lesson. Includes detailed answers to all tasks, plus notes to support non-specialists. Teaching time approx 1hour. Contains: A PowerPoint - fun and interactive with a range of tasks to keep students engaged following the traditional starter, main, plenary format. 1 x worksheet - structured to support the students note taking highlighting the important points. Students will learn new content and will have opportunity to practise exam and data analysis skills as per the specification. Introduction to microscopes and cells - ideal first lesson for Year 7 biology. Complete lesson ready to use, just download, print and go! Can also be used for a flipped learning approach. This fun lesson introduces students to using microscopes in a fun and careful way. This lesson is designed to work with some practical elements - magnifying glasses/bioviewers and light microscopes with prepared slides. Lesson contains: Concise learning objectives - referred to through the lesson to check learning has occurred. Emphasis on developing and applying correct language. A range of different challenges to develop understanding and familiarity with the content. Plenary questions which will both build confidence and challenge more able students to achieve full marks. Final activity can be used as an exit task - recall parts of the microscope using a self assessing worksheet (this can also be printed if students lack IT equipment). Includes detailed answers to all tasks, plus notes to support non-specialists. Teaching time approx 1hour. Define the keyword eukaryote (uses precise specification language to be correct for final GCSE exam) Recap on KS3 knowledge leading to the correct labelling of both plant and animal cell diagrams (worksheet 1). Worksheets on Word: • One worksheet highlighting key concepts in sampling and maths skills. • All answers are given on the PowerPoint. This lesson specifically teaches ‘Key opportunities for skills development’ taken from the AQA specification. WS 2.3 – apply a range of techniques, including the use of transects and quadrats, and the measurement of an abiotic factor. (in theory) MS 1d, 3a – estimates of population size based on sampling. MS 2d – understand principles of sampling. MS 4c – plot and draw appropriate graphs selecting appropriate scales for the axes. This lesson is not supposed to be a replacement for the required practical but works equally well hand in hand with it as a follow up to support you to be able to cover all the necessary content with your students. Recap the basic structure of a plant. Beautiful photos demonstrate to students some of the variety within the plant kingdom. Fun task: Identify and explain the different adaptations plants have for defence (using 3 common examples from the British countryside). This leads into a written exam style question task (with answers for self/peer assessment). Fun class keyword activity. Paired discussion activity leading to short written task. Pollination task - exam style thinking and question task. Demonstration of seed dispersal adaptations (both wind and animal). Introduction of extremophiles. Required practical - Investigate the effect of light intensity on the rate of photosynthesis using an aquatic organism such as pondweed. Available in a bundle as a complete unit of work. AQA specification 4.4.1.2 Rate of photosynthesis. Complete lesson ready to use just download, print and go! Designed for teachers to deliver (specialist and non-specialists) but I have found more & more students need to access resources independently so my lessons are structured in a way that students can navigate for remote learning or to catch up on missed content. Includes: Easy-to-follow PowerPoint: • all answers to each fun activity are present on the PowerPoint. • helpful notes present on some slides to support non-specialists or first-time teachers of this topic. • Differentiated resources - alternate versions of task 2 available to support lower ability students. Worksheets on Word: • Each of the three worksheets allow students to develop their understanding of photosynthesis and skills associated with practical & maths work in Biology. • All answers are given on the PowerPoint. This lesson specifically teaches/recaps the following ‘Key opportunities for skills development’ taken from the AQA specification. WS 2.2 – plan experiments to test hypotheses. WS 2.5 – recognise that multiple samples will be needed at each light intensity. WS 3.1 – present a graph of light intensity against rate of photosynthesis. WS 3.2 – translate numeric data into graphical form. MS 1a, 1c – measure and understand the rate of photosynthesis reactions. MS 4a, 4c – plot and draw appropriate graphs of rate of photosynthesis against light intensity selecting appropriate scale for axes. This lesson is not supposed to be a replacement for the required practical but works equally well hand in hand with it as a follow up or could be used in conjunction with one of the recorded demonstrations available on YouTube in order for you to be able to cover all the necessary content with your students.
