Successful Silence 5 minute Quiet Time Lesson Strategy Positive Behaviour Idea Lesson Study

Simple idea....Make sure the student have everything they need to do the work. Make sure you have prepped them and given them opportunities to discuss it and ask questions. Check everyone understands what to do and how to do it. Then give them the task and insist on five minutes of "Successful silence". During this time they are absolutely not allowed to talk - even the students with TA's. That way they are given the chance to work quietly. This is something the students have said they want - quiet time to work in. This was done as a "Action Research Lesson Study" with the North East Teacher Development Trust Network. Circle Circumference Learning Collaborative Magenta Principles Mastery Activities & WS

(0)
A series of activities to consolidate (Master!) understanding of how to work out the circumference of a circle given the radius or diameter. It is designed to be used after we've investigated how PI comes from C / d and we've introduced the idea of C = PI x d. There are three sets of cards which are ready to be printed out on different coloured card. Each card activity has a matching work sheet done as a sticker so that there is a record of the activity in the pupils exercise book. Each activity card set is designed to be given to be a mixed ability table of four pupils. They discuss and (hopefully!) develop their understanding! Card set 1 is given out as 20 cards where the pupils "Diamond Nine" (or any other valuing/ranking/ordering layout) the cards discussing which are the most useful facts for finding the circumference. There are few wrong answers as most of the points are right for most questions. The sticker backs this up into the books. Card Set 2 is given out as 16 cards where the pupils again rank which are the most important to remember when doing their working. Again they all are correct so it's a discussion and learning activity. The sticker is then just a check list to go in their books. I will always ask them to use a highlighter pen to indicate the key phrases etc. Card Set 3 is given out as a set of 9 cards. (Print out one card as an answer sheet for you) and the pupils simply have to put the cards in order. The sticker then requires them to back it up in to their books. This activity uses some of the ideas which our school has been made aware of in recent courses - a) Magenta Principles by Mike Hughes and b) Achieving Mastery in Mathematics.

Divide your wall space into different sections and label each section with the "Poster Headings". In particular add the "Finished what next?" labels onto the "Finished board" as a suggestion for what students can do when they have finished their set work If you like this then please check out my many other Maths activities listed on my TES Resources shop and pages including many Premium resources which may be able to save you lots of time and give you some useful ideas. Triangle Type Properties Classification Magenta Principles Maths Mastery Rap Battle Fun Activity Show the PPT. Have the discussion. Back it up with the the stickers the next lesson to get something in their books. Great for you to see what their level of understanding is. Lots of fun. Play some Eminem in the back ground and get them to rap their answers. Best answers so far ....I'd be a scalene triangle because I will have the greatest number of different weapons (i.e. angles) ....I'd be a very acute angled triangle because I could stand further away. I've thrown in somehelpful PowerPoints and word docs which will be needed to start the discussions.

Divisibility & Factors Starter

Each slide asks "What is this number divisible by?" It then uses animation to show the factors of that number. A prompt then asks "How do we know". I'm planning to use this as a starter to learning Divisibility. The pupils will display their answers on their indivudal pupil whiteboards and then answer "How do we know" to the class or to their table mates.

Special Number Properties Primes Factor Multiple Key Word Flash Cards SNATCH MATCH activity game

All the key words you need for number properties lessons at KS3. Any of these words can be printed out and laminated on A5 size cards for the "SNATCH MATCH" game. This is where the words are blu tacked to the wall and students stand a metre away. Teacher (or a TA or competent pupil) asks questions where the answer is one of the snatch match cards. The students are usually in two teams facing the wall. Two students at a time have the opportunity to snatch the right card. Loads of fun! 245 Maths Mental Arithmetic Numeracy Oral Questions and Answers KS2 and KS3.

Made this a few years ago when there was still a MA test at KS2. I collected all the KS2 15 second questions I could and then made a few more versions of each type until I ended up with all these. You print them out on A4 card. Fold each card in half. Then give one sheet to a student. He/She then reads questions to his/her partner. If needed he/she shows the question hint which is on the far right of the table - hence the fold in the card. These work really well. Makes a nice lesson starter routine or ender. There are 45 sheets of A4 so should take a while for them all to be seen by every student.

WallGameCards = Snatch Match. Print, cut out and laminate. Blue tack them to your wall. Students stand a metre away in teams so that they compete against one person each. You (or a clever student or a TA) asks questions and the students compete to grab the card with the answer. DominoCardsHarder and 4SetsDominosCards = The original is really hard. I then split them into four card sets which makes each set much easier. Identify the triangles from their properties on the cards.

Three versions depending on whether you have a colour printer or not (I use the school colour printer to print the aliens onto the stickers and then bring them home and as and when I think of the questions I B&W print the questions on. If you have a colour laser then just print direct on the the "Colour" sticker. Also included a set of Exit Tickets for a lesson.

Loads of resources to help in the classroom GOGO = Pupils write three and then go around and find three more Consensus Place mat = Table of four each write their answers around the outside in their space and then agree on a common answer Question Pyramid - Template to help you plan your questions so that they satisfy Blooms Taxonomy and have a mix of higher and lower order questions. One picture starter to use for this and two prompt cards which ask students to give evidence. Reflection pie can be used where the group have to agree on how much of the activity they participated in and show it on a pie chart. Put it on A3 and then get them to draw a pie chart which they all agree on. Target Achieved label can help improve effort Yes No cards can be used by individuals to give answers or to display when they are stuck. Posters go on wall if you are having them run left or right for Yes or No. The dice number cards you make up and give one to each student on a table (up to six). You can then ask all the ones to give an answer etc.
