This Procedural Writing resource scaffolds procedure in a how-to writing style essay. All lessons revolve around the prompt: How to Wrap a Gift. OVERVIEW OF LESSON DELIVERY:
Students will first study the written sample (both formats): How to wrap a gift.
Next, they will deconstruct structure by answering 13 questions. To avoid flipping the sheet back and forth to look for answers, they refer to the mini one page booklet that features the text.
After, students will cut and paste pictures and also match them to sentences to practise sequential order.
Then, they will write sentences using given action words, picture clues and words in a word bank to practise ordering and writing steps in a process.
Soon after, students will write out the procedure on How to Wrap a Gift by themselves and will self-edit and peer edit their final writing pieces.
Finally, students will submit their completed how to writing piece for teacher feedback.
** Note: all lessons and writing practice revolve around the mentor text, ‘How to Wrap a Gift’, this is so students will have ample practice on adhering to structure and writing style by modelling their writing on the same. You can then provide them with a writing prompt of your choice to apply skills learned.
Have your students write a research report on an Australian Animal with this hands-on digital resource. Teach your students 20 essential reading strategies. The 20 task cards with or without QR codes will help your students practise key reading strategies with any text they read. Each card has an explanation of the strategy and 2-3 tasks that requires the application of that strategy.

Students have the option to scan the QR Code on each task card or refer to the print out of the poetic element information card to respond to the questions on their Response Sheets.
If printing the poetic elements information cards, you may spread them around the classroom. I personally like to tape to walls, so they don’t get lost in all the excitement.
Students work individually, in pairs, or in small groups to record their responses.
Display the poetic elements information cards on the bulletin board post activity to craft an eye-catching and informative display.

SUGGESTED USE:
♦ Project the PDF file on the interactive notebook to introduce the parts of a fiction book report via the posters/anchor charts. Also show students the flipbook templates and completed sample. Discuss the requirements for each template of the book report.
♦ Have students collect information in their flipbook on the specific book under study. This could also serve as their draft where they could use the self-editing and peer-editing checklists to edit. Finally have students publish on given writing sheets or type out content from draft observing corrections.

HOW TO ASSEMBLE FLIPBOOK:
You can choose either of the two options.
⇒ Print out the templates in blackline. Cut around each template and assemble from smallest template to largest template. Have students colour in pages. Staple at top tab for flipbook or glue descending order in notebook.
⇒ Print out the templates on cardstock (different colours). Cut around each template and assemble. Attach at top.

PREPARATION
→ For grades 2-3, bundle up to 6 sheets together after sorting, align them perfectly and cut.
→ For grades 4-6, students are old enough to cut and compile flipbooks on their own. I have my students compile all sections of the flipbook prior to research and writing.
DISPLAY
After completion, display students’ flipbooks under the Banner.
These flipbooks are sure to make an interesting bulletin board display.
