A detailed chapter study of the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. Included: vocabulary study from various chapters comprehension questions for a variety of chapters character analysis on all of the main characters in the book a wide range of independent activities which engage children with the content of the story. This is a selection of resources in which I used alongside reading the story to my class. It can be used for guided reading sessions also. During the independent activities children are asked to: Re-write the blurb Re-draw the cover for the book Write a letter to Veruca Salt’s Dad Write a diary entry from Grandpa Joe’s point of view. Design the chocolate palace Design a golden ticket Children really engaged with the story and learned some new words also through the vocabulary study. An editable book cover hunt. Children will follow the clues on the reverse side of each book cover and hunt around the school for some hidden treasure. They must write down the names of the book covers that they come across too and aim to read at least one of them that week. Just something a bit different during Book Week to engage them with different books. Can’t get this song out of your head? Well neither can we! Dig deeply into the lyrics for comprehension and close reading practice with these high-interest, current songs to allow children to use their deduction and inference skills. This comprehension is based on the song ‘Mamma Mia’ from the Mamma Mia movie and Abba of course because: We all love the song Mamma Mia. It’s something a little bit different to analyse a song. The children discussed the lyrics in detail, trying to decide what they meant. It allowed them to appreciate the lyrics in songs and not just to sing them. There is a mix of questions involved in these comprehensions, asking children to: *locate information from the text *rate the effectiveness of certain words and EXPLAIN the reason for the answer *form an opinion on the lyrics. Do they like/dislike the lyrics? Why? Overall, children will gain an understanding of the meaning behind the lyrics and they will be encouraged to form opinions on a song, which is something a little bit different. Each week, I like to give my children a new comprehension to 1) check their understanding and 2) immerse them to different text types. While studying poetry, I discovered that many children found it difficult to decode the meaning behind poetry. This resource contains: *A poem. *Questions to check understanding. *An answer sheet. The poem chosen is one of my favorites as it’s about bullying so it can tie into other lessons/discussions that arise in the classroom. It’s written by an Irish author, so there are 2 or 3 phrases included that children may not understand. This is a fantastic opportunity for them to use their reading skills to read back over the sentence and try to work out what the word means. A really enjoyable poem and it can also be sent home as a homework activity. Overall, children will gain an understanding of the meaning behind the poem and they will be encouraged to form opinions on a poem, which is something a little bit different. I hope you enjoy this resource as much as we did!

Class Assembly: Don't Judge a Book by its Cover.

My most recent class assembly was based on Theseus and the Minotaur (with a twist). We had covered this story during our topic of myths https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/myths-understanding-the-features-11943412 and the children LOVED it. I wrote this play script based on the myth however we added a little twist. The minotaur is known to be a FEARSOME, UGLY creature, but in our story he turns out to be nice once people get to know him. Moral: Don’t judge a book by its cover. The play script is editable to ensure that there is enough lines for the children in your class. I have 25 and there is 25 parts. However, it is an easy script to edit and adapt. To tie it all together, we sang ‘Eye of the Tiger’ in the middle of the performance which went down a treat with the parents and the school. Masks NOT included This resource contains the script ONLY and in total the play lasted about 15 minutes. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did and please let me know how you and your class got on.

Resources, plan, presentation and SPAG. This week of lessons really helped bring on the children's descriptive writing. The video clips help them to imagine things clearer and bring great life to their writing. I found it really successful. It focuses on getting the children to use their sense to imagine what a scene looks like. SPAG lesson is on prepositions and this presentation was accumulated from TES website also. My class assembly that I did today as we have been studying fairy tales for the last 2 weeks. Cinderella can seem a bit babyish for Year 4 students, however we made it a funny version and the audience were in tears laughing. This script is funny, modern and is easily adaptable. I made one of the stepsisters a boy (wears the wig etc) and the audience loved it. My prince was also a girl and she as fantastic, put on the deep voice and all. Included is: The script (which is easy to follow and has stage directions included) The layout in which I sat the children The downloads of the music I used An invitation to give to the parents. Both the children and the parents adored the assembly. A personal highlight of mine is that the children sing working 9-5 by Dolly Parton- amazing.

This was a fantastic week of English lessons, including lots of speaking and listening activities, resulting in effective writing. This genre was studied through the story ‘Journey to Jo’Burg’. To which we read the first two chapters online (pdf linked in planning) and ended up writing the third chapter as our ‘big write’ including an issue and dilemma. Lesson 1: Children explore the terms issue and dilemma by engaging in a conscience alley, forcing the child acting as the main character to make a decision based on a dilemma. (thoroughly enjoyable). Lesson 2: Children read through the chapter 1 and 2 (linked in planning) and underline dialogue, action and different words for the word ‘said’. This allows children to see the exact style used by the author in order for them to recreate their very own chapter 3 in the style of the story. Planning is also done in this lesson. Lesson 3: The success criteria is shared with the children and they are then allowed the remainder of the lesson to finish off their chapter 3. The end product was fantastic! The children came up with their own title for their chapter and really took on the style of the author, alternating between dialogue and action. It was fantastic! After hours of reading and PD on Pie Corbett’s Talk4Writing, I decided to plan my English lessons around his style of teaching. The idea behind it is fun filled, active and different so my children and I absolutely love it! Included: 4 day, detailed lesson plan (differentiation included). Power Point of the features of a report. ‘Who killed King Tut’ text resource (colour coded). ‘Boxing it up’ plan Report starters- which allow the children to get into the mind of writing report style sentences. Text mapping opportunities- which allow children to act out and DRAW the entire report so they can recite it, thus learning the sentence structure orally. I have put a lot of detail into the lesson plan, so it can be easily followed to apply this style of teaching to your English lessons. The idea behind it is: Week 1= Imitation Phase. In this week, children need to learn off a text to fully immerse themselves in the style of writing, structure, language etc. This is done through actions and also text mapping (drawing pictures). Only when children fully understand a text type, should they begin to write. The writing of a report will be done at the end of week 2. (This resource is only week 1). By the end of the week, your children should fully understand the features of a report, and should be able to recite the whole thing using their text map. It’s lots of fun and a fantastic scaffolding for children to understand before they write. Give it a try!

This resource is a fun way to encourage children to read the high frequency words in Reception. They will need to be cut out, with the elephant stuck to the back of the word and then laminated. Once they're done once, you'll have them forever. It consists of a selection of the high frequency words at Reception level, with a colourful background to keep them interested. You will need to print two copies of this resource in order to play the game. I played it in groups of 4: *Give each child in the group an even amount of cards. *Instruct them to leave them all in front of them (elephant facing up). *The first child must place their first card down, sound it out/read it. *The next child repeats etc until there is two of the same words placed one after the other. *They all must race to say SNAP if two cards sitting on top of each other are the same word. *The person to say it first, gets all of the cards in the pile and they begin again. This resource can be used as an extension activity for early finishers, or as a revision tool at the end of the year, or even as your weekly game to expose children to these words more frequently. Prior to a ‘big write’, I ask the children to stick these into their books as a check list to ensure they include all of the necessary features of our chosen genre. You can add extra things on there too, such as a whole class target or focus you’ve been working on that week (e.g. similes or openers). I use it as a slight assessment tool for myself to see how my children are progressing in writing. They complete a big write at the end of our genre which is usually every 2-3 weeks. It’s a simple tool to show progression in writing as well as make use of self and peer assessment. Just edit this document to suit the needs of your class/genre in writing. I’d love to hear how you got on using them :)

I created these bookmarks to laminate and have in my children’s English books as they struggle to spell these words. By seeing them spelt correctly so often, they got better at spelling them themselves. Easy to edit also.
