Modelled on the US Moratorium Marches, the Australian Moratorium Marches of 1970-71 brought together a number of anti-Vietnam War groups in the staging of massive shows of public anti-war feeling. However, they were not effective at all in changing the views of the federal Liberal-National Party Government or conservative groups such as the Returned Services League. But they were a key factor in showing the general public that majority support was behind withdrawing Australian troops from the Vietnam conflict and were a step towards the Labor Party winning the 1972 federal election. Anna is the narrator of the story of Hitler's daughter, a story that she has made up. But the sights, smells and sounds are just a little too real. Students are provided with a summary of her background, personality and key quotes. They are then asked to imagine they are staying with family in Wallaby Creek and they meet Anna. They must think of 5 complex questions you would like to ask Anna about herself. They then think of 5 ways that they would change Anna's story to make it more dramatic or romantic or historical. Modelled on the U.S. Freedom Rides in the early 1960s, Charles Perkins embarked on a Freedom Ride of his own with Sydney University students in 1965. The event was followed closely by the Australian media who reported on the disruptions to the life of country towns. In the longer-term, however, the road trip highlighted the racial inequities and discrimination against Aboriginal peoples. This Powerpoint presentation gives an overview of the ride and the impact on Aboriginal rights.
