Children often find it hard to remember the difference between area and perimeter, which affects their ability to do calculations correctly.
So, the more memory aids we can use to help them, the more likely it is that they will remember the difference.
With this activity, children color in the word “AREA” which covers the area of the rectangle, and they write the word “PERIMETER” around the perimeter of the rectangle.
I’ve included a full page and half page option.
You may also like an engaging, real-world activity like this one to practise area and perimeter.
This resource is a free download for single-classroom use only. It can not be copied, shared, rewritten, amended, sold or distributed to others.
There are several maths skills that can incorporate the Matariki whetū/stars, so I created this activity for teachers that want to bring Matariki into their maths lesson, or who want to weave maths skills with the environment.
These activities are ideal for year 3-6 students and can be adapted if needed. The questions cover measurement of length using rulers (to the nearest cm, but if you have children that want to measure in mm, that’s great), positional language, identifying shapes, and locating Matariki whetū/stars using coordinates. There are two options to choose from with the questions and the questions are editable, so you can adapt them to your needs.
This activity is ideal for the whole class, small groups, early finishers, and rotating stations.
You’ll receive 2 PDFs and 2 editable PPTX files.

This fun, hands-on Christmas craft pack ticks a lot of boxes. Your students will love making seven Christmas crafts, which could be turned into ornaments, and there’s an option to cover geometry maths skills at the same time.
The seven crafts include a Christmas tree (cone), present (cube), bauble (sphere), milk and biscuits (cylinders), Santa hat (pyramid), and gingerbread house (rectangular prism and triangular prism).
To turn the crafts into ornaments add string or ribbon, or use the paper handles included on each page.
To integrate this activity with maths, use the properties of 3D shapes for younger students, and the nets with measurements and recording sheets for finding the surface area of the nets. The net measurements are based on the actual sizes rounded to the nearest inch or cm and range in size from 2-6 inches/4-8cm.

All kids would love to design their dream bedroom or dream treehouse, so these area and perimeter practice activities will spark their imagination and creativity! Plus, they’ll get plenty of practice at applying concepts of perimeter and area.
There are two different design options – a dream bedroom and a dream treehouse, so you can choose one or the other, or use both. Each design comes with options for perimeter, area, or perimeter and area. Measurements include centimetres and inches, and area also includes square units.
Students choose the items they’d like to add to their dream bedroom or treehouse, draw them on the grid, then measure and record the area and/or perimeter.
Recording sheets are included but these are optional as children can easily write their answers in their workbooks if you prefer.
Just print and go!
