Two worksheets (one for less able and one for more able) on the characteristics that pupils think make a good god. What characteristics are important in a god? What characteristics are not important and why? What do the words ‘eternal’, ‘omnipotent’ and ‘omniscient’ mean? A good accompaniment for an RE lesson where children discuss what qualities/traits are important in terms of leadership.

A reading comprehension that tells the story of a World War evacuee who is sent to the Devon countryside. Having been sent to live with the Hardiman’s, Robert discovers that the old man’s longtime ambition is to catch the much sought after ‘Old Percy’ - a huge 40lb pike that has never before been caught. The reading comprehension consists of twenty marks and provides practice on true/false, fact/opinion, chronological ordering, recall, retrieval and inference. A file with the answers is also included for ease of marking. Ideal exercise in the build-up to SATs, or just for a normal reading comprehension exercise in upper KS2. Can also be used as part of a World War 2 topic.

I sometimes find children can be slightly unclear on the actual difference between fact and opinion. This always seems to come up in the SAT reading papers so I constructed this short exercise that incorporates a passage on New York. Should serve well as a 10 minute starter that can be discussed as a class afterwards. Alternatively, it could serve as a shared class reading exercise.

The Ghost of Christmas Past - comprehension written in the 1st person by the Ghost of Christmas Past as he explains his role on Christmas Eve - visiting wrongdoers can be a trying business when you’d rather be tucked up by the fire! The Christmas Tree - first person opinion piece written by a rather grumpy Christmas tree who laments on being dragged into his human household for a month every December. Both comprehension come complete with a 15 question comprehension paper and answers for ease of marking. Enjoy.

Halloween: The Footsteps in the Attic: A short story about a young man who buys a run-down house only to discover there is something strange going bump in the night. Story is accompanied by a comprehension quiz that runs a similar line of questioning to a year 6 SAT paper for good practice. Answer are also enclosed for ease of marking. Bonfire Night Lights in the Sky A short poem and opinion piece by the author, detailing his memories of November 5th when he was a child.
