This is a visual and themed book list and recommendations A3 poster. Ensuring that all of your students can understand what they read is incredibly important. Comprehension is a fundamental principle for learning. So how can you develop students’ comprehension skills? This handy worksheet resource is a very good start! Pop this in whatever book your students are reading, and ask them to get into the habit of writing a one sentence summary of what they’ve just read. Get them to do it after every time they read, whether at school or at home. This will mean that every time they then come back to their book, they can read their own summary, which is more likely to trigger memories of reading the book. It also means that as they are reading, they know they are going to have to write a summary sentence when they’ve finished, so they are more aware and focused on the plot/characters/events within the book. This is particularly useful for when teaching SEN or low ability students! By the time they’ve finished reading their book, they will have a mostly complete worksheet and series of sentences that they can reflect on for writing book reviews!
