BTEC ICT unit 2 SAMs, 2020, 2021 & June 22 - video tutorials and solutions files for all of it

5 Resources
Unit 2 is the toughest part of the BTEC in ICT for most teachers. Now you have everything you need to get going with it if databases are not your area of expertise. Video tutorials on how to solve both section A and B of the SAMS (Beaches & Sharebrook) and also video tutorials to show you how to solve both the section A and B of the 2020 Rockhill exam and the 2021 Smart Art exam. I will even include the solution database files for you to play with too. EDIT Now includes the June 22 Automatic Vending Machines exam too

ICT BTEC Unit 6 - How to build a distinction level website with WordPress

First of all £10 - that’s a bargain, you will save so much time and the websites you get will be so much better than you have had in the past, honestly I should be charging hundreds. I never understand why you would want to build a website from the ground up with CSS and HTML - it’s daft, no-one in the real world does this, they use the likes of WordPress, SquareSpace, Wix or Shopify. Now if you go down the WordPress route, you can get free hosting, your students have access to build their sites 24/7 from anywhere they can access the net, and they will build something that actually looks professional. WordPress is not template driven like Wix. I have had many students go through this unit at Distinction level using Wordpress and these videos show you how to do it all. Themes, pages, media, plugins, CSS, Javascript and even some SEO to tie in with unit 3. I promise you your students will build cracking websites really quickly and you won’t go back to HTML or the likes of Dreamweaver or WYSWIG editors, it’s not 2005 you know, the world has moved on. Oh one thing if you watch the preview video on YouTube please understand the real videos are much better quality and easier to see what’s going on.

Making the classic breakout game using Scratch

OK this is a series of 28 videos that show kids how to build breakout, however they don't simply watch and repeat. There are many short little videos that break down the build into little tasks, your students simply watch a task video and try to solve that little chunk themselves. Don't worry if they get stuck then there is also a solution video. This method of teaching actually gets the kids to think rather than simply copying the standard type of tutorial videos that you find on YouTube. If you want to check out all of the videos before purchasing then you can do so with the free android app below, or for a few pennies the Apple version too. I guarantee that your students will be extended beyond what most currently do with scratch and it really is not that tough. Downloading this resource gives you licence to drop it on your VLE or shared resource drive for kids to access from in school or at home, it does not allow you to place it on a website in the public domain. https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/scratch-kids-lite/id957195511?mt=8 'Scratch Kids Lite' brings you 3 sets of video tutorials to get you going making your very first activity and game in the new version of Scratch 2. However, these are not the sort of standard tutorials that you find on the web. During the videos you will be set tasks to do in scratch and hopefully you will be able to complete them on your own. However don't worry the next video in each project will show you how to complete the task!! These videos are really targeted at KS2 students although the content of the full app will go on to stretch and challenge even the most able of them with variables, cloning, broadcasting and many other features of Scratch. There's even a quiz in the app so you can test your scratch knowledge too!!

Video lessons for python turtle using Mu Editor

So I made a few videos to get my year 7s going with Python turtle using the Mu Editor as it is the most “kid-friendly” IDE out there and most importantly it’s a free download. Anyway it’s all done rather well and has kept the kids busy for about 10 * 50 minute lessons. Basically write you name, draw a house, add some birds, use some hex, draw some flags. I like to think it covers pretty much most tools and will take the kids on to defining their own functions and calling them when required, Works well, especially in the flags exercise if you want lots of stars like a Brazilian flag or and American one. Also we show how to use the random library, so each picture can be different each time ie. birds of different sizes and positions in the image. Our final assessment was to give them a picture of a rocket made of filled in rectangle, triangles, squares and circles, get them to recreate it, and let them choose what background it would sit on, so the more able could do a night sky with stars and a crescent moon.

42 videos and exercises to introduce beginners to Python

A fabulous set of tutorials to get you going using Python. These are not ordinary 'watch and repeat' tutorials that you traditionally find on the internet. Each video will set a task for the learner to complete and if the learner needs a little support to complete the task then there is always a solution video on hand too. No prior knowledge of python required. There are 6 distinct python tasks to make. A simple calculator program, a hi lo game, a magic 8 ball, a random name picker, the fizz buzz game and a Pythagoras calculator. These would keep new programmers busy in class for a fair few hours and this app is an ideal tool to help cover the requirements of the new computing curriculum. Users will need to download Python and we will be using the IDLE IDE to get going. If you want to check out the content of these videos for free before downloading then they are available as a free app on iOS and Android. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=training.computing.learnpython https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/python-for-beginners/id1082132961?mt=8 If you do purchase the videos then you are granted a licence to place them on a shared area within your school or on a VLE that requires a user ID and password to access (no guest access). Basically as long as the general public can't get to them then that fine...

Just Basic Tutorials

Just Basic is probably the easiest "in" to programming that I have come across. The videos below are about 3 hours worth of screencasts to get you going with the software and will keep your students busy for many lessons. There are lots and lots of different little exercises and challenges to do, it's not just one great big build. Before you wade into the actual screencasts you will need to ensure you download the zip file that has 4 .bas files in it, these will be needed for the little challenges that I set throughout the videos.

These videos bring you a whole bunch of tutorials to get your kids going making their own games in the new version of Scratch 2.0. This are not the sort of standard tutorials that you find on the web. During the videos kids will be set tasks to do in scratch and hopefully they will be able to complete them on their own. However don't worry the next video in each project will show them how to complete the task!! Each of the 9 zip files attached here contain numerous video tutorials within them. These videos are really targeted at KS2 and KS3 students although the content will go on to stretch and challenge even the most able of them with variables, cloning, broadcasting and many other features of Scratch. You can just sit back and relax without having to plan anything. Oh and there is enough material to keep your students busy for around many hours, even if they don't manage to have a go at the extension tasks that are identified for all 5 games!! If you want to try the videos before buying this resource then there are already app versions of it. It free on Android and just 79p on Apple. The App versions have hit the top ten in educational downloads in over 50 countries and have made number 1 in 14 already with those numbers going up monthly. I am 100% confident you won't be disappointed. Apple - https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/scratch-kids/id955314895?mt=8 Android - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=training.computing.scratchkids Please understand that purchasing these videos give you the right to use them on an internal VLE or shared drive in school, they can not be placed in the public domain so they can be accessed outside of school (unless on a secure VLE).

Cambridge Nationals R001 complete video tutorial set for all theory

A set of 31 videos that cover the entire theoretical content of the R001 Cambridge Nationals in ICT course. They can be used as snippets in lessons, flipped classrooms or just dropped on a VLE for revision purposes. You can check out a couple of sample videos below https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/cambridge-nationals-r001-screencasts-a-sample-11478359 Please don’t put these videos into the public domain, on a VLE or shared area at school is fine though.

Making videos like Cassetteboy using wevideo

So here is a wonderful lesson that kids genuinely really enjoy doing. I hate it when people say kids love doing something when they don’t really but this is different, this lesson genuinely gets them all really motivated because it’s easy to do and the outcomes can be very funny indeed. You simply take 2 video files of speeches made by Donald Trump, work out what you want him to say by extracting the words from the speeches, then stitch them altogether. I use Wevideo to do this because then kids don’t have an excuse that they don’t have the software at home as it’s just in the browser. You can also save any work from class directly on the Wevideo website and they can carry on at home. The editing will keep kids busy for a couple of lessons and you can differentiate by getting your more able students to source other Donald Trump speeches and text from this site https://millercenter.org/the-presidency/presidential-speeches and as the video points out it’s easy enough to add subtitles and credits too.

Setting a professional level newspaper with Publisher 2019 and Photopea

Here’s a fabulous resource to keep KS3/4 kids busy for several hours and show them how to make “proper” newspaper front pages using DTP and graphics using good old Publisher 2019 (which your students can get for free if you have a suitable school Microsoft licence - most do) and photopea.com (which is free and online). Loads of skills, simple to follow, easily accessible, fun for your students and you get artwork for your classroom walls. It’s what we in the trade call a win/win/win/win/win

Mail merge and spreadsheet test

I use this as a mock exam for my year 8 students. It's a mail merged letter to apply for premiership football manager&'s jobs. Bit of a spoof one that requires kids to make a logo and create a graph too. I based it around where I work in Sittingbourne, but you could easily adjust the text in the letter and instructions to work for where you live.
