Y9 GCSE Dance Taster: Choreography 12 lesson delivery PowerPoint and Resources

(0)
This year 9 GCSE Dance Taster: Choreography 12 lesson delivery PowerPoint has been created for teachers of Dance preparing their Year 9 pupils for GCSE. During lessons 1-6, pupils will explore a variety of different stimuli used in choreography e.g. 2D art and text. Pupils will learn how to create and develop motifs based on a stimulus, structure their choreographies and experimenting with choreographic devices. During lessons 7-12, pupils will choose from a list of stimuli (based on the actual GCSE component 1 exam paper), take part in research tasks and choreograph their own group choreography. At the end of the SOW, pupils will be assessed using the GCSE choreography mark sheet. Each lesson comes with starters (bell activities) and lesson objectives. The SOW also includes: Homework 1 – Choreography exam style questions (based on section A of the written dance exam paper) Homework 2 – Programme note with examples. Choreography help sheet (I advise printing this out back to back and laminating for each group) Research task (theory lesson). Please note, the video included in the PowerPoint is from Eaqa. You can use your own example video if you prefer.

Updated: 11/08/22 This Rock and Roll 6 lesson SOL is for teachers teaching year KS3 dance (ideally year 7 after teaching ‘Intro to Dance’. This is a fun and energetic SOL designed for pupils to have fun while learning performance, choreography and appreciation skills through the Rock and Roll dance style. The PowerPoint is structured around my choreography of ‘Jail House Rock’ From the Blues Brothers musical and some of the terminology used e.g. ‘pancake roll’ is terminology that I use rather than being a technical term. This is not a PowerPoint that you will be able to use unedited. Feel free to edit for whichever Rock and Roll song you would like to use. Includes: • 6 lesson (60 min per lesson) delivery PowerPoint with: ‘Enquiry questions’, ‘Do Now’ activities, ‘TIF (Take It Further) challenges’, YouTube clips and level descriptors. • STAR marking grid • Mark sheet • Dance feedback toolkit
Teaching Transferable Skills (KS3 and KS2)

Teaching Transferable Skills (KS3 and KS2)

This resource contains 4 lessons dedicated to developing pupils transferable skills (communication, time management, creative problem solving and team work) though Performing Arts games and activities. Each lesson focuses on one of the 4 transferable skills (communication, time management, creative problem solving and team work). Each lesson is complete with starter activities (in the form of Bell tasks) and TIF tasks (take it further). I am a Performing Arts teacher but strongly believe that you do not have to be a Performing Arts teacher to deliver these lessons as each game is explained on the PowerPoint. I created these lessons after observing pupils in my class who didn’t appear to have the transferable skills that they needed to fully engage with the activities of my lessons. It dawned on me that we as teachers sometimes presume that pupils naturally have the transferable skills that we need them to have e.g. working in a group environment but we don’t tend to ‘teach’ them those transferable skills or dedicate lessons to help them develop such skills. So that’s exactly what I decided to to do. I created these lessons with my Year 8 classes in mind but I am sure year 7 and even primary school aged children would enjoy these lessons. My year 8s really enjoyed these lessons and I feel made an impact. I now often refer to them when teaching my normal curriculum lessons. e.g. "you have 5 min to complete this task, remember our time management lesson…’ This resource would also be good for PSHCE and for teachers teaching pupils with additional needs.

KS3 Dance - Year 8 - Objects as Stimulus - 6 lesson SOL and Resources

Updated: 11/08/22 This ‘Objects as Stimulus’ 6 lesson SOL is for teachers teaching KS3 dance. This ‘Objects as Stimulus’ resource is an alternative resource to my ‘Artificial Things’ resource. The difference between the 2 resources is that ‘objects as Stimulus’ can be taught to pupils at KS3 who will progress to either GCSE or BTEC at KS4. Whereas my previous ‘Artificial Things’ resource was aimed at KS3 pupils who would progress to GCSE only. This SOL has been designed to encourage pupils to use their imagination and apply their creativity at the same time as developing their dance skills. Choreography skills are homed in on in this SOL, as pupils are given an object as a stimulus (the box) and taught how to create motifs that can be later on developed to create a dance that is entertaining to watch. Later on in the SOL, pupils choose their own object as a stimulus to create and develop their own motifs into their own choreographies. Throughout the choreography tasks, dance appreciation is explored through questioning why pupil’s motifs relate to their object stimulus and what actions, space, dynamics and relationships they have used. Includes: 6 lesson (60 min per lesson) delivery PowerPoint with: ‘Enquiry questions’, ‘Do Now’ activities, ‘TIF (Take It Further) challenges’, YouTube clips and level descriptors. STAR marking grid Mark sheet Written task Cover work Dance feedback toolkit

This PowerPoint was delivered as a 45 min training session for teachers, to promote the importance of teaching transferable skills as well as curriculum content within lessons. This is an interactive training session with games and activities to get teachers actively taking part as well as listening. The PowerPoint comes with notes (under each slide) to help with the delivery and gives instructions for the games/tasks involved. Anything in speech marks is what I said during that particular slide and I also give examples from my teaching experience. Fee free to change and adapt the PowerPoint to suit you. There is space at the top and bottom of each slide to add your own school logo/banner.

This is a resource for teachers of Pearson BTEC Level 1/Level 2 Tech Award in Performing Arts Unit 1: Exploring the Performing Arts choosing to study Kenrick Sandy and Emancipation of Expressionism for one of their practitioners. This resource is intended to be used after delivering my ‘L2 BTEC Performing Arts Unit 1 Introduction to Kenrick Sandy and Emancipation of Expressionism’ scheme of learning. This resource includes 6 x 1-2 hour lessons/practical workshops to guide your BTEC Performing Arts pupils though the information they need to include in their dance research journal once the assignment brief is launched. Each lesson/workshop is complete with bell activities, TIF tasks and homework tasks. All homework tasks link to the dance research journal that pupils need to submit in accordance to the assignment brief. (Please note, the pupils I teach and use this resource with have 2 teachers. I plan and deliver lessons on one dance practitioner – Kenrick Sandy. The other teacher plans and delivers lessons on 2 drama practitioners. This resource covers just what I deliver and therefore only covers 1 practitioner). KS1 Dance – Caribbean Calypso SOL

(0)
UPDATED AND IMPROVED ON 11/10/2021 This resource is for KS1 teachers teaching dance through the Physical Education part of the national curriculum during the topic of the Caribbean (or any topic connected to the Caribbean, holidays or Zumba). Calypso dance was formed in the islands of Trinidad and Tobago by African people enslaved in the Caribbean in the 1800s. They were treated very badly and had to work in horrific conditions. However, during their free time, they celebrated through singing and dancing and this is how the style began. Although then, the dance style was about telling stories through dance; today, Calypso dance moves are used in Zumba fitness routines as they are fun and energetic. This SOL comes with: 6 lesson plans, detailing the activities in each lesson along with coaching points to aid teaching. A 6 lesson PowerPoint including notes under each slide to help with the delivery of the lesson. A CPD document that should help with aspects of teaching dance that a none dance specialist might find helpful. Notes: The timings of the lesson and the activities within the lesson plans can of course be adapted. Activities can be changed, lengthened, shortened, taken out, differentiated etc. Feel free to adapt this resource to suit your own needs as well as the needs of the children. Feel free to use your own music. I used Luis Fonsi, Stefflon Don – Calypso on YouTube. I loved teaching this SOL and I hope you do too. If you find it helpful, I would massively appreciate it if you could leave me a review

KS4 GCSE Dance Revision – Component 2: Choreographic Devices and Intent within the Anthology

(0)
This resource has been designed for teachers of GCSE dance revising choreographic devices and choreographic intent within the anthology, in preparation for the written exam. This lesson has been created to provide a way for dance students to revise in a fun and interactive way. Prior to the lesson, decide how you are going to divide your class into 6 groups (ideally a mixture of high and low ability in each group). After the starter activity on the PowerPoint sit pupils in their groups and give them access to one of the GCSE dance anthology dances each, either on their phones or iPads. Links to GCSE dance anthology dances can be found on EAQA but you will need a log in to access them. While watching their given dance piece, pupils should write notes about the choreographic devices that they see. Discuss with each group how the choreographic devices relates to the choreographic intent of the piece. After the discussion, give each group their exam question handout and allow pupils to answer the 2 questions (using their notes to help them).

KS4 AQA GCSE Dance Revision – Component 2: Section C This resource has been designed for teachers of GCSE dance revising the dance anthology in preparation for the written exam. This lesson has been created to provide a way for dance students to revise in a fun and interactive way. Prior to the lesson, decide how you are going to divide your class into 6 groups (ideally a mixture of high and low ability in each group). Each group should be given a large piece of paper with one of the 6 dance anthology pieces written in the middle, then use the PowerPoint. I spent approximately 5 min per slide and got the pupils to rotate around the room rather than the paper. You will need the six anthology fact files found on the AQA GCSE Dance website for the latter part of the lesson. Once the lesson is complete you will have revision display posters created by the dance pupils themselves.

KS4 PSHE Social Media vs Real Life

(0)
A bit different to the usual dance resources I upload. However, I have created a 1 hour lesson delivery PowerPoint on the theme of social media and how people on social media don’t always show their true selves. Please note, this PowerPoint does not cover cyber crimes, grooming etc. It is much more about how young people may feel about themselves and how they might compare themselves to others based on what they see online. In this PowerPoint you will find lesson objectives, a bell activity (starter), discussion tasks, talking points, TIF tasks and links to YouTube clips (one clip is also embedded). I have also included a marking sheet that can be stuck into pupils books to aid quick marking. My Y10 tutor group loved it and really got stuck in. I hope yours do too.
