This is a comprehensive overview of a scheme of work I created as Head of English. This links to the specific reading and writing strands from the National Curriculum. Each half termly topic for Year 7-9 links to the learning outcomes which are in individual tables. Therefore making it a 64 page word file which is sufficient for any inspection. NB: This is specific to a curriculum I created for the upcoming academic year and my own scheme of work.

This lesson is perfect for an English class on their first day back at school for KS3. The studied poem is ‘Summer Goes’ by Russell Hoban. The lesson primarily focuses on how the students in your class can relate to the speaker in the poem after summer ends. The resource has a PowerPoint and a copy of the poem included.

In this PowerPoint students start by giving their opinion of Fagin from what they have read in the text before reading the ending of the novel. The extracts focus on Oliver and Fagin’s conversation while Fagin is in prison. The students work in pairs with differentiated sheets and answer questions on the extract. These are also included. The end of this PowerPoint then asks the students if their opinion of Fagin has changed after close analysis of the extract. The main aim of this class is for students to build a sense of empathy for Fagin and come to the realisation that Bill Sykes is the real villain in this story.

This lesson analyses Bishop’s In the Waiting Room in a stanza by stanza manner by pointing out certain poetic techniques. This comes after students are asked for their first impression of the poem as a starter.

This lesson focuses on Stave one of ‘A Christmas Carol’. The lesson gives students awareness of the many techniques uses such as pathetic fallacy to create such an atmosphere. The lesson starts with the students’ first impression of Scrooge by analysing an extract describing Scrooge. It also makes students aware of such things as plot, character relationships and dialogue etc.
