The Next Generation Science and Engineering Standards include 8 Practices which are vital for students to acquire and use as they become active participants in investigating their world. These pennants give a visual representation of the standards and can be used in a variety of ways to remind students (and teachers!) that alongside the content standards, there are practices that guide us to be successful.

Composite numbers have only two factors. Levels 2, 3, 4-Numbers are broken into their prime factorization and rewritten using exponents.

As students engage in authentic problem solving, they learn how to apply the mathematics they learn in the classroom to the world beyond! Students must determine who received a greater portion of a tray of brownies in task. -This task encourages students to apply their fraction sense to determine when and how to appropriately multiply and divide whole numbers and fractions. -Additionally, students will compare two unit fractions to determine which is greater. This PowerPoint includes teacher facilitation questions, a guide to understanding the mathematics in the problem, a scaffolded approach to problem solving, and possible solutions. This is the method I use to help my students engage deeply in problem solving and stretch themselves beyond "number plugging" as many students do when they solve a "word problem". I have included a powerpoint version as well as a printable .pdf to fit the needs of your classroom.

Why Plan Online? My teacher planners are always totally cute-but I don't carry them with me all day. Not carrying a huge book shouldn’t limit my ability to work on the go and use those pockets of free time to prepare for my kiddos, so I began creating this planner based on my needs and have added ideas based on feedback from others. New year? No Problem! I plan to update this each spring with new calendar pages. You can make a copy of next year’s file and then use the Insert > Import Slides button to import any of the items from previous years that you want to use again. Want to use different planning styles for different units? Easy! Just duplicate the slides you want to use and place them in an order that makes sense to you. Once this planner is yours, you can make as many as you want. I organize by quarter so I have four. I duplicate what I need and delete the rest!
