Causes of deforestation research
Children use internet search engines in small groups to find out more about a specific threat to the worlds rainforests. Children collect information in the form of notes and present their concerns and solutions to the class.
Madagascan Chameleon
Using Madagascan Chameleons as a model, show children how they can focus upon particularly interesting aspects of their chosen creature. They will need to write an explanation of this feature. Model this using the chameleon’s camouflage.
Suitable for years 5 and 6.
Adaptations of life in the Rainforest
The rainforest ecosystem is one of the oldest on the planet. Animals living there have adapted to suit their habitat. Children find out more about animals who use camouflage, sharp claws, long beaks or tails to survive in the jungle.

A day in the life! Rainforest Diaries
Your lunch is what you find to eat in the rainforest, not the contents of mum’s packed lunch! But there are other important differences too!
Children use their notes from the previous session to compare their lives to those of children in the Jungle.
Places of Worship
One way in which the various religions that are now practised in Britain are noticeable is the building of their places of worship.
Children annotate maps of the local town or city with places of worship or research the places of worship. Add to display.
Multi-media presentation - Saving rainforest
In this session children look at a multi media presentation prepared by you which has some good bits and some that need improving!
Children then use what they have learnt to plan and then start work on their own using notes from previous sessions.
Rainforests: Looking into deforestation
In the next ten years at the current rate half of the world’s rainforests will disappear. Children look in brief at the causes of deforestation before creating on maps a horrific view of the future.
Rainstorms - composing music
A storm is brewing. Thunder rumbles in the distance! In this session children use a text as a starting point for a musical composition. Using their own instruments made in the previous session they compose, record and perform their own music in groups.
Appliqué – Cutting & Sewing
In this session children complete their Appliqué by cutting and sewing the pieces of their design before proudly displaying it in the classroom. They take time to reflect on the whole dyeing and designing process and evaluate the finished product.
Endangered Animals 2
In this session children are shown how to use search engines to search for images, and be selective about those that they choose. Children then continue to collect key word notes about their animal or plant.
Effect of Global Warming
In this session children take a closer look at the causes of global warming and look at the long term effects. How can they do their part to reduce the greenhouse effect? They put it to the test in the Great Greenhouse Effect Quiz!
Headdress to Impress!
The Kayapo Indians who live in the Rainforests of Brazil are famous for their ceremonial headdresses. In this session children use the internet to study their designs before creating their own to wear in the classroom.
Global Warming and Its Causes
What is global warning? Children find out what global warming is and how humans have caused and are contributing to the problem. Children compare life now to life 100 years ago and highlight the changes which have increased CO2 levels.
Endangered Animals
In this session children find out that it’s not only the Orangu-tans that are endangered. Children select animals or plants from the lists provided and start to find out more about their chosen animal or plant.
Jungle Jars, Bowls and Pots
In this session children take a look at typical examples of pots created by peoples of the Rainforests. They study the differences in pattern and decoration before creating their own pot from clay and decorating it.
Jungle Junk
Listen to the Rhythm of the Rainforest in this session! Children start by studying the Baka people who live in the African Rainforests, looking in detail at their instruments. Children then create simple instruments of their own using junk modelling techniques.
Rainforests - Creating Images weeks 1 - 2
This poetry unit allows children to explore the wonderful array of rainforest animals. They use two poetry books to explore different features and go on to use these as structures their own poems. They have fun performing their poems to other children in the school

Plants with a Purpose
What have plants ever done for us? In this session children find out that plants are more useful than we might imagine.
After discussing all of the benefits and recording them, children start to consider how what plants give us can be used in more creative ways.
Yr 3 Unit 1B Performance and Favourite poets
Two fun weeks of performing and reviewing poetry. Children read, listen to, write, learn and perform simple ‘conversation’ poems.
They study and discuss a wide range of poems and write a review. A class book of favourite poems is made!
From Romans To Save The Children
Children continue work on health and hygiene in relation to clean water and the diseases caused/transmitted by dirty water. Using the Save the Children website, children discover the ways in which this issue is being tackled in different parts of the world.
