An example diary text written from the point of view of an ancient Egyptian boy, plus glossary and differentiated diary planning templates. The diary recounts a day in the life of an ancient Egyptian child living in the artisan village of Deir el-Medina, which was known by the villagers at the time as Pa Demi (the village). This village housed the workers who built and decorated the royal tombs in the nearby Valley of the Kings during the New Kingdom period, including the tomb of King Tutankhamun. A glossary of key terms used in the model diary entry is also provided, plus three differentiated planning sheets so that pupils can plan and write their own diary entries of an ancient Egyptian child. A punctuation mark matching activity with three levels of differentiation. Pupils match each card showing a punctuation mark symbol with an explanation of its use and an example sentence or sentences. An answer sheet is included. This activity helps pupils to remember the names of punctuation marks and how they are used. It can be used when introducing new punctuation marks to a class in lower key stage two or as a revision activity for upper key stage two (or even KS3). This activity is ideal as a starter or plenary for an English/literacy lesson or punctuation lesson. The cards have been differentiated three ways: • Lower ability: example sentences display the featured punctuation in red • Middle ability: featured punctuation is missing with its position indicated by a red rectangle • Higher ability: featured punctuation is missing An ideal activity for pupils to carry out in pairs or small groups. Example texts demonstrating dialogue writing with direct speech based on the beautiful children’s picture book Journey by Aaron Becker. The 3 differentiated example texts contain conversations between the female protagonist and her elder sister when she is bored and looking for someone to play with. Differentiated feature find worksheets with answers are included – perfect for sharing in class or uploading during online lessons for remote learning. All resources are differentiated three ways. The model texts are useful as WAGOLLs to examine before children attempt their own dialogue writing based on the book. All documents are provided in PDF and easily editable Word format. A model diary writing text based on the beautiful wordless picture book Journey by Aaron Becker. The model recount text is a diary entry written from the point of view of the female protagonist. The diary comes with a feature find task, which asks pupils to search for the following writing features including figurative language and other literary devices, grammar and punctuation: Language features • Similes • Metaphors • Personification • Rule of three • Repetition for effect • Onomatopoeia • Alliteration • Rhetorical questions Grammar features • Mainly past tense • Present tense (at the end of the diary) • Future tense (at the end of the diary) • Present perfect tense • Past progressive tense • Passive voice • First person • Fronted adverbials followed by a comma • Variety of nouns to avoid repetition • Expanded noun phrases • Coordinating conjunctions • Subordinating conjunctions • Relative pronouns Punctuation features • Apostrophes for contraction • Apostrophes for possession • Dashes • Colons • Semi-colons • Hyphens • Brackets An answer sheet has been included. The diary example can be used as a WAGOLL before pupils write their own diary entries based on Journey. Two activities and a quiz involving identifying correctly and incorrectly punctuated contractions. Pupils must look carefully at the sentences to check if the apostrophes for omission have been put in the correct place for a variety of contracted words. There are three activities provided: ✽ Contractions Quiz: pupils identify whether each sentence is correctly or incorrectly punctuated. This quiz is great to use as a starter or plenary with the whole class with pupils working independently or in pairs. Each sentence contains one or more contractions, or words that are often confused with contractions, that have been correctly or incorrectly punctuated. Each answer is revealed and explained on the next slide. ✽ Contractions Card Sort: pupils sort the cards into correct and incorrect piles. Great for paired or small group work. Both large and small versions are provided, plus an answer sheet. ✽ Contractions Worksheet: pupils select the correct use of omission apostrophes and spelling of the contractions used in sentences. They also add missing contractions to sentences. Great as an independent assessment task. ✽ Contraction Word Bank: can be used by SEN or lower ability pupils to support them while carrying out these activities. This word bank is also a useful reference sheet for independent writing activities. As well as common contraction use, these resources also look at the following errors in contraction use: • Confusing it’s with its • Confusing who’s with whose • Confusing they’re with there or their • Confusing plural nouns with contractions ending with ’s Answers to all tasks are included.
