A 9 page scafolded learning activity which is designed to develop experimental design skills. OBJECTIVES: • Apply the Scientific Method to a given situation in real life. • Design a Hypothesis that is in the form of a “If…Then…” statement that is TESTABLE! • Design an experiment with all necessary components, including an independent variable, dependent variable(s), controlled variables, control group, experimental group, and procedures. • Collect data from and experiment and analyze it to determine correctness of a hypothesis. • Evaluate the strength of an experiment based on it deisgn.

Aimed at year 9 student Word document and PowerPoint format Included: word document containing information regarding the advantages and disadvantages of ling near volcanoes as a hazard. PowerPoint with worked literacy example. Students use the source material to create a summary table (template on slide 4) developing skills in extracting information from a source and comprehension. Teacher guided answers on slide 5. Students then use literacy aid (slide 2) to construct a discussion. Teacher then leads a worked example through using slides 7 and 8.
