Encouraging students to speak can be quite challenging in the languages classroom, and I’ve found that even my more advanced learners can be quite reluctant, especially if the group is fairly large. I use a range of strategies to promote speaking, and idioms, proverbs and fun expressions which sound quite strange when translated literally are really popular - for example, we have regular competitions to see who can get the most idioms or expressions into dialogues and conversations. This works really well for students of all stages and ages. The posters show the literal translation, which generally sounds very odd, such as this particular idiom Occupe-toi de tes oignons ! - Deal with your own onions! and the correct corresponding translation. We also discuss other possible translations into English, which helps them understand the concept of translation, and that there are potentially many correct ways of expressing meaning accurately. The posters also lend the learning environment a real French ambiance, promoting the everyday use of French. There are two backgrounds to choose from -French flag , or plain. I like to have sets of super simple worksheets that I can give to my young beginner learners of German, not only when they’re new to the target vocabulary, but also for refreshing and revising language they’ve learnt some time ago. Students can generally more easily assimilate new language and vocabulary when they are able to link it in their memory with a visual image, and it’s particularly important to match a clock time with the corresponding clock face when learning how to tell time. I give my students these worksheets when I’m introducing o’clock in German, so that they can practice and embed both recognizing the time, and writing the time phrase itself. Students really enjoy the opportunity to test their recall too. The worksheets are useful in a number of contexts: I use them for sub lessons, as starters, plenaries, five-minute refreshers and home learning activities. I occasionally use them for more formal assessment purposes too. Students also find this How to tell time in German o’clock list freebie helpful: HOW TO TELL TIME IN GERMAN : O’CLOCK LIST FREEBIE https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/german-telling-the-time-o-clock-list-freebie-12316801 Have a browse in my store for more German super simple worksheets, and a wide range of other German teaching and learning materials, with German dollar deals, special offer bundles, and lots of freebies. Please read the Terms of Use. My students really like this kind of grammar activity, as they like to work and learn independently, which is a successful way of varying teaching and learning methodologies - I’ve found it’s really important to avoid predominantly teacher-led learning in the languages classroom. There are 150 conjugations across 3 differentiated conjugation challenges. I use these kinds of workbooks in lots of different ways: for practice during the introduction phase, for independent choice in class time, for home learning, for practice and revision during vacation and at return to class, and for cover lessons - they’re really versatile, and ideal for advanced beginner Italian into intermediate Italian students who are beginning to work with more complex texts, including a range of tenses. Though the workbook focuses solely on the correct conjugation of verbs, and does not look at word order in the context of full sentences, there are conjugation patterns that students can learn, recognise and apply, ensuring that their spoken and written Italian is accurate, and that their understanding of Italian across the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing is robust. The resource is structured as follows: Two alphabetical verb reference lists: Italian-English and English-Italian. Three conjugation challenges, each with 50 individual conjugations: Conjugation Challenge 1: each verb conjugated in Italian across a range of pronouns, with students writing the corresponding English verb conjugation. Conjugation Challenge 2: gives the infinitive of each verb in Italian, specifying the target pronoun. Students write the corresponding verb conjugation in Italian. Conjugation Challenge 3: students write the corresponding Italian verb conjugation, and its infinitive, from an English prompt. Notes and Next Steps template which students visit regularly - it really does encourage them to think about where they are now, how confident they feel, and what they might need to work on a little more to be absolutely sure of their conjugation skills. We also note down any new verbs we meet, which enables students to build up their own verb vocabulary bank. answer key Try this free Italian conjugation workbook sampler to see if it’s the kind of learning activity that will work well for your students: ITALIAN CONJUGATION PRACTICE SAMPLER https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/italian-conjugation-practice-sampler-12507124 GRAZIE MILLE E BUON APPRENDIMENTO!

I encourage my beginner Italian students of all ages and stages to build up comprehensive vocabulary banks that they can reference easily whenever they need it, and they’re also really useful for regular vocabulary audits, which really helps students map their progress and keep track of their learning. Students take responsibility for organizing their own learning materials from the very beginning of their learning, keeping them carefully in vocabulary learning files or folders. My students all have reference resource binders or files - these can have a range of formats - for instance, sticking into a large exercise book, or punching holes down the left-hand side, and adding to files. We also use twine or thick string, which young Italian learners really enjoy making. I also use this kind of vocabulary list for quick vocabulary quizzes, spelling competitions and so on, and it also works well laminated for small-group work in class time. The font size is fairly large, as ensuring that language is clear and accessible is essential for beginner language learners, as they begin to familiarize themselves with words and spelling systems in a new language. I have also uploaded a number reference sheet I give my more experienced Italian learners - it’s in landscape format, with all the numbers on a single sheet, so the font size is smaller - students who’ve been learning Italian for a while are comfortable with quite a lot of text on a single page. Have a look at it here: ITALIAN NUMBERS 0-100 LIST FREEBIE #2 https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/italian-numbers-0-100-list-freebie-2-12439282 There are two backgrounds to choose from - Italian flag, which I generally use for Italian vocabulary display, and plain. ITALIAN VERBS LIST FREEBIE #2

(1)
BEGINNER ITALIAN INTERMEDIATE ITALIAN ITALIAN GRAMMAR HIGH-FREQUENCY ITALIAN VERBS LIST FREEBIE 25 high-frequency Italian verbs, listed alphabetically Italian-English and English-Italian ideal as a year-round reference resource, and students find it particularly useful for exam revision, whether working in class time or at home. It’s useful for advanced beginner Italian students to provide a language learning map, and for intermediate Italian students who are working with more complex language and texts, including authentic resources, and as a vocabulary audit and enrichment. The verbs are all in the infinitive form and include regular and irregular high-frequency Italian verbs. I’ve noted where a verb is conjugated with essere, which is a really handy quick guide to the particular features of the verb, and useful for later learning when we look at conjugation, such as the passato prossimo for example. It’s important in language learning to ensure that students quickly develop a useful Italian verb vocabulary bank, are able to recognize high-frequency Italian verbs, and are confident with the meaning of those verbs in their first or home language. At that point students can move swiftly on to looking at conjugation and using the verbs in a communicative and practical context, enabling them to produce more detailed and descriptive language. This is an integral element to successful language learning. I’ve found that vocabulary lists are a great language learning support resource, and they’re really popular with students too. They work well when students keep them carefully in learning files or folders for current and future reference, either in class or at home. They also work well printed double-sided and laminated for small-group work in class. The list is a great time-saver for teachers too - if you’re preparing resources focusing on high-frequency Italian verbs for your students, the list is a good starting point. There are two backgrounds to choose from - Italian flag, which I generally use for Italian vocabulary display or Italian grammar display, and plain. French classroom language display posters which creates an instant introduction to 20 commonly-used expressions in your French classroom. The posters also give the learning environment a fabulous French look and feel, promoting French as a living language, featuring in the everyday life of your learners. They introduce learners to a range simple everyday language in French from the very beginning of their learning, and they are able to familiarize themselves with both the ‘look’ of French words, and how sounds are represented in the written form. The language is simple and effective, suitable for absolute beginners. I use the posters to promote use of the target language in contexts that we meet frequently and regularly, such as***Asseyez-vous ! Levez la main ! and Écoutez !*** There are some greetings, such as Bonjour tout le monde ! and Comment ça va ? It’s important to build routines in the language classroom, using only the target language, and avoiding translating everything orally when we speak to learners. It’s easy to develop conversational routines too, starting with greetings, and asking how people are - I generally do this with talk time, encouraging learners to ask each other how they are for example. The expressions in this set are: Do you understand?; Yes, I understand; A volunteer please; Let’s start please; Put your pencils down; Open your workbooks; Close your workbooks; Who has finished?; I have finished; Louder please; Have a good day; Have a good weekend; Sit in a circle; What is your name?; My name is…; What is the date today?; The date us…; More quickly; More slowly; Very good There are two backgrounds to choose from - French flag or plain white, so 40 posters in total. The flag background will definitely use a lot of printer ink, but I always laminate my posters, so that I can use them for years. The plain white background looks great too! To get the most from the questions, I frequently look at the multiple-choice questions as a whole-group, identifying not only why there is a single correct response, but what the errors are in the other choices - identifying errors, and explaining precisely why something is inaccurate or incorrect, helps students to think about language a little more laterally, and ensures that they are thinking concepts through, rather than simply relying on learned responses. The cards are useful not only when you’re focusing on French Numbers 0-31, but also for sub lessons, as an all-year-round starter, plenary and general ‘pick-me-up’ activity, as the goal is not simply to learn how to count in French, but also to enjoy working with French, and to feel confident about doing so. All questions are in French, and range in complexity and challenge, both in terms of language and number skills. I’ve used visual prompts such as math symbols to ensure all learners can engage with the questions, and this helps them to begin to infer meaning from context, and to decode cues and prompts to foster understanding. I don’t allow the use of calculators to increase the challenge a little. Some questions focus specifically on French math language, which students do not always engage with very often. The level of math is fairly simple, but certainly draws on prior number and arithmetic learning. I’ve labelled the cards A-L, so that if you have the set of 48 task cards, you can use them together. They’re great for helping students familiarise themselves with, and develop competence in, speaking, reading, writing and spelling in French in general, and certainly in conjugating French ER verbs in the present tense in particular. The questions range in complexity and challenge, and some call upon prior and new knowledge too, helping students make links and build bridges in their learning. There may be some vocabulary that students are not familiar with - these questions give them the opportunity to learn and apply new language too. Other grammatical concepts are addressed in the questions too, such as gender agreement, direct and indirect objects, personal pronouns and question formats in French. The set comprises the following non-editable files: 12 differentiated question cards 4 per A4 (8.5 x 11) paper. The card size allows for more complex sentences, and equally importantly for a font size that is sufficiently large to ensure that language is accessible to students, who are generally at the more initial stages of their French programmes. answer key answer keys are integral to this kind of learning activity: they provide students with additional opportunity to engage with language and help them develop more independence in their learning. To keep prep to a minimum, the answers are given across two pages of A4, which I print double-sided. Here, the text is a little dense, so some students may need additional support if they find the text too small to access successfully. Please read the Terms of Use. French Numbers 0-31 Task Cards really do help to create a lively language learning environment. Students can develop, embed, reinforce and refresh their knowledge of French numbers in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. They have a bonus multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading and spelling. They’re great for helping beginner French students familiarise themselves with, and develop competence in, speaking, reading, writing and spelling longer words in French. The question card template enables students to apply their knowledge of language and arithmetic creatively and practically, which is integral to successful language learning. My students also genuinely enjoy creating questions for each other. These German Christmas word searches are a real winner - the Christmas-theme is always a great motivator. There are 33 German Christmas words, and I’ve chosen a selection of more generic Christmas words, and also some which are very German-specific, such as Sankt Nikolaus and Knecht Ruprecht. Students shouldn’t attempt to learn all the vocabulary at once, as the objective of the word searches is to engage with German Christmas vocabulary, to really focus on the individual words, genders and articles, and to have lots of practice at general recall, writing and spelling. The German Christmas vocabulary list is ideal as a long-term reference resource, and really useful for students when they are working more creatively and independently, for example***German Christmas reading comprehension, German Christmas writing activities*** and so on. There is an increasing challenge through the grids, and the differentiation does ensure that all students are challenged. There are 5 German to German grids, with a vocabulary list to complete for additional consolidation. There are also 5 English to German grids, also with a vocabulary list to complete, which is a great way to really work on students’ recall and spelling. Students can identify the level of challenge by the increasing size of the grid, number of words to search for, and the direction the words appear in, which they can see by the direction of the arrows at the top of the grids. I’ve put a couple of extra challenges in too, to encourage students to look really carefully at the words - for example, they may have to find candles and work out what that is in German - only the prompt die Adventskerze appears in the reference list. Answer keys are essential in my view, and I always give them to students. Not only are they a great teacher-time saver, they give students an additional opportunity to engage with language, and help them develop more independence in their learning. If you can, laminate the answer keys, and distribute amongst small groups of students during classtime - they will definitely last for years. German reflexive verbs in the imperfect tense including some not essentially reflexive, such as sich kaufen, which is useful for practising the use of the dative reflexive - with 3 differentiated conjugation challenges, 150 quick conjugations and complete answer key. The workbook focuses on the mechanics of conjugation, rather than usage, and I’ve found that when my students are able to provide the correct conjugation very quickly, and out of a specific context, they feel really confident that their German conjugation skills are developing well. The structure is as follows: Two alphabetical verb reference lists: German-English and English-German. Three conjugation challenges, each with 50 individual conjugations: Conjugation Challenge 1: each verb conjugated in German across a range of pronouns, with students writing the corresponding English verb conjugation. Conjugation Challenge 2: gives the infinitive of each verb in German, specifying the target pronoun. Students write the corresponding verb conjugation in German. Conjugation Challenge 3: students write the corresponding German verb conjugation, and its infinitive, from an English prompt. Notes and Next Steps sheet, which encourages students to think about how their understanding of German conjugation works, what progress they have made, what their targets for improvement might realistically be, and what they might reasonably do in order to meet those targets. Please read the Terms of Use carefully. 25 high-frequency German separable verbs, 150 conjugation questions, 3 differentiated challenges, answer keys ideal for advanced German students who have a sound understanding of conjugation and tense in German, are working regularly with the notion of a range of tenses and mood in German, and have a solid grasp of verbs that are conjugated with either haben or sein in the relevant tenses. It’s actually really useful to introduce the future perfect tense in German fairly closely with the conditional perfect tense, as the patterns are identical, other than the auxiliary tense, and it allows students to compare and contrast the tenses, and to practise both fairly simultaneously - in my experience, students do not confuse or mix up the tenses when they’re learning and using them together… The focus is on common separable prefixes such as ab, an, aus, ein, um and zu. Prefixes such as entlang and entgegen are not included in this particular collection of verbs. The resource has the following structure: Two alphabetical verb reference lists: German-English and English-German.
