This outstanding lesson has been designed to help students studying the historical controversies surrounding the campaign to get women the vote in Britain. The women’s movement was split between the peaceful suffragists on the one hand, who made up nearly 80% of women, whilst on the other there were the better known militant suffragettes. The lesson resources have been designed to suit the full spectrum of ability at KS3 and should work alongside any mainstream textbook or resource on this topic. However, I have also included a PowerPoint to accompany the lesson which includes all the necessary background knowledge for the lesson. This outstanding resource has been designed to help students looking in depth at the historical controversy over President Truman’s decision to drop the atomic bomb on Japan in 1945. At the time the USA claimed that the decision to drop the bomb on Japan was based on military factors. This resources presents students with the primary, secondary and key information to compare this interpretation with three others including to scare the USSR, test the weapon, revenge for Pear Harbor and come to a balanced independent conclusion. The resources and text level would suit a middle to upper ability group and could be used as a class or extended homework based resource. There is enough work and activity to last between 3/4 lessons for a middle ability class. This is a depth study which allows students to weigh up the evidence, compare sources and come to a reasoned assessment which form the basis for an essay. This outstanding lesson on why the RAF won the Battle of Britain, was amongst one of our most popular downloads we had schoollhistory.co.uk and has been tried, tested and fine tuned over many years. This newer version has been fully updated with a wider range of tasks and activities to suit the modern classroom, but if you would still like to use the classic version, then I have also included it as a PDF file. These resources are suitable for the full ability range and include a wide range of differentiated activities. When you purchases these resources you will be able to download an eighteen slide PowerPoint to accompany the lesson and two different versions of a four page page worksheet. I have also included a numeracy activity that can be used in lesson or set as homework. The PowerPoint is designed to be used as a standalone resource or if you prefer to accompany the worksheet and contains the aims, objectives, differentiated outcomes, starters, plenaries, pictures diagrams, information and links to video clips, that you will need to teach the lesson. With the exception of the classic version, all the worksheets have been supplied in Microsoft Word. The lesson begins by looking at the military situation in 1940 and gets students to analyse why Germany decided to invade and the challenges that they would face trying to cross the English Channel. This is followed up by another activity which gets students to listen to Churchill’s famous ‘we will fight them on the beaches’ speech and to assess why it was made in Parliament and broadcast to the nation. These outstanding resources on the Christmas Truce in 1914 are a great lesson no matter the time of year, but they make a particularly moving, touching and inspirational end to the long Autumn Term on the meaning of Christmas. I’ve provided two resources with this lesson. They can be used in any subject across the curriculum. This topic links to History, Music, RE, PSCHE, English, Drama and Music. The first resource is a worksheet with a series of activities aimed to support a wide spectrum of learners. I’ve built in extension tasks as well as DART strategies for the less able. The PowerPoint is designed to primarily to support the delivery of the worksheet, but includes the aims and objectives, a snowballing starter for pair and share, differentiated questions for different groups, historical sources and diagrams to help illustrate core ideas as well as carefully selected video and music clips. This is one of my favourite lessons and I am confident that it will quickly become yours as well. Anti-Semtism in Europe 1880 - 1945

These resources look at the origins of anti-Semitism in Europe and how it evolved into the Final Solution. The key focus is on events in Russia, France and Germany, but is important to point out to your students that it was evident throughout Europe and the USA at this time. The resources that have been bundled together have all been field tested in the classroom and are amongst our most popular downloads from the History Academy where we aim to produce resources for the price of a good cup of coffee. If you are new to teaching or studying this topic then its important to understand that anti-Semitism still exists and that the need to find scapegoats or someone to blame when things go wrong is one of the more nastier aspects of human nature and that falls to each generation to how this in check through education. The old biblical quote ‘Evil is when a few good men decide to do nothing’, is very relevant to studying this topic. The modern version of anti-Semitism that we in Europe at this time grew out of events in Russia. The country was struggling politically, economically and socially so the Russian Tsar’s tried to redirect the Russian peoples attention onto blaming or 'scape goating ’ the Jews. This led to attacks on the Russian Jews which in turn led their mass migration into Europe and the USA. The arrival of these refugees stirred up latent anti-Semtism which made it harder for the existing Jewish communities and turn both anti-Semitism and Zionism into political movements in Europe. These movements were fueled by the political, social, economic and military crisis that grew out of German Unification 1871, The First World War 1914 - 1918, the Treaty of Versailles and the the creation of the Weimar Republic in 1919. These events are covered in the resources that cover Russia, France and Germany 1880 to 1920. The booklet the 'Nazi attack on the Jews 1919 to 1945, cover the rise of the Nazi Party and the impact of the Great Depression and the Second World War 1939 - 1945. When teaching your students about anti-Semitism do not forget that Facism or Nazism was not limited to Germany. The SS drew their recruits from all across Europe. Anti-Semitism was not a ‘German’ problem, it was a European and American problem based upon the prevailing racism of the time. My Dutch grandmother always drew a distinction between the ‘German Army’ or the ‘Wehrmacht’ and the SS. She remembered seeing a Dutch member of the SS shoot an old lady who was trying to pass food and water to Dutch Jews who were being deported in the cattle cars. Kind Regards Roy

For far too long the history of Africa has been neglected and relegated. Its time to address this and restore African history to its rightful place alongside other civilisations. The debate over whether the Benin Bronzes should be returned to Nigeria has divided opinion across the World. Unlike the Elgin Marbles, there can be no doubt that the Benin Bronzes they were stolen by the British Army in 1897. However, returning them is no simple matter for a combination of factors which have been summarised in this fun and interactive card sort exercise. Should freedom of information and speech be limited to protect public morality by governments or social media platforms? Should children be shielded from violence and sexually explicit material? Should the rich and famous be protected by privacy laws? Should the government stop terrorist groups using social media to recruit and spread their ideology? This great little card sort has been tried and tested in the classroom over many years and aims to help students understand some of the arguments for and against the use of censorship. It can be used as a starter, plenary or main activity to accompany any main stream text book or resource on this topic. The nature of the task means that it appeals to the full range of ability. The main activity involves getting students to cut out the cards in lesson, organize them into their most persuasive order under the two main headings and then sick them into their books. Once students have fed back their results to a class discussion, they can then have a go at the extended writing activity or add additional ideas from the class discussion. Alternatively, they can create a key and then sort through the cards and then stick the sheet into their book or you could cut out the cards and place them into an envelope for them to sort prior to a discussion on the topic. This is a great resource that can be easily adapted to suit your classroom and expectations. This clever little card sort can be used as a starter or plenary exercise on the impact of the Roman invasion of Britain in AD 43. Students have two headings and have to cut out the cards and sort them under one of two headings, Britain before the Roman invasion and Britain after the invasion. For more able students I have included an extension exercise or discussion point for the class asking them to assess whether life for ordinary people improved or got worse after the invasion. How did Britain's West African Squadron stop the Transatlantic Slave Trade 1807 - 1867?

This outstanding lesson looks at one of Britain’s forgotten periods of history and lexplores how the Royal Navy’s West Africa Squadron heroically suppressed the Transatlantic Slave Trade from 1807 to 1867. Through a wide range of fun and interactive activities, students can learn how 36 Royal Navy ships with 4,000 men and just under half of the countries military budget, successfully stopped and freed over 150,000 human beings who was destined for a life of misery as slaves. During this time, 76,000 British sailors died fighting to stop the slave trade. Many people today are calling for the statues of slave traders to be pulled down and instead replaced with a memorial to those brave, heroic British sailors. This outstanding lesson on slave resistance looks at the different ways in which Black people challenged slavery. It also tries to answer the difficult question about why some people did not try and run away by contextualising the learning and looking at the experiences of former veterans and prisoners who have struggled to cope with adjusting to an unstructured life of freedom. Unlike other resources on this topic, this lesson also looks at the contrasting experiences of Black people in the USA, Jamaica and Haiti and how they had to adjust the way in which they resisted slavery to suit the problems and different challenges they faced. Finally, this lesson poses the question, how successful was slave resistance and links it’s importance to the abolition debate. Did you know that more British soldiers died trying to maintain slavery in the Caribbean, than died fighting to free Europe from Napoleon? This fun and interactive lesson, has been commissioned by the History Academy, to shine a spotlight on a lesser-explored facet of women’s history. Delving into the different roles women played during the English Civil War, the lesson illuminates their contributions, from leading armies and fortifying against sieges, to safeguarding homes, serving as camp followers, providing medical care, trade, ensuring food production, assuming responsibilities in law enforcement, leadership of their churches and, diplomatic negotiations and even fighting as soldiers. Once the marketplace activity is complete, students have the opportunity to reinforce their learning through engaging exercises such as a ‘heads and tails’ activity or a continuum, post-it note voting exercise. Subsequently, you can then choose to set them a fully supported extended writing task that challenges students to critically analyse the extent to which they agree with the traditional interpretation encapsulated in the statement: “Women did not play any important roles during the English Civil Wars.” This task encourages students to delve deeper and reevaluate the significance of women’s contributions during this period. This lesson is designed to helped students develop their source analysis skills by studying a range of primary and secondary sources that look at Charles I’s personality and leadership skills as King of England. It can be used with a range of abilities and can easily be edited to customised to suit the needs of your own students. I have included a higher and lower ability version of the same worksheet to aid differentiation. When you purchase this resource, you will receive a a higher and lower ability version of a two page worksheet. The higher worksheet includes nine carefully primary and secondary sources which span two pages of the worksheet and with four tasks and activities. Whilst the lower version includes seven primary and secondary sources, but includes three additional questions to provide additional support. This resource works really well as a follow up to my other resource son the Roman Army. It looks at the reasons why the Emperor decided to build a wall separating Britons from the barbarians as well as how it was designed and built. There is also a section on everyday life on the wall including toilets and bath houses. The tasks and activities are designed for levels of ability and include DART strategies for SEN as well as questions and answers for the more able. The last activity is a word search which can easily be copied to another document and printed off for homework. If you have purchased this resource in the past, I have recently uploaded a new PowerPoint to accompany the main worksheet. This lesson aims to help students assess whether prison sentences work by looking at the experiences in the UK. This is a controversial subject with people from all sides advocating different solutions from longer sentences to rehabilitate prisoners to alternatives sentences based in the community. This card sort can be used with a range of abilities and has never failed to get my students excited, engaged, whilst improving their understanding of this difficult topic. The main activity involves getting students to cut out the cards in lesson, organise them into their most persuasive order under the two main headings and then sick them into their books. Once students have fed back their results to a class discussion, they can then have a go at the extended writing activity. Alternatively, they can create a key and then sort through the cards and then stick the sheet into their book or you could cut out the cards and place them into an envelope for them to sort prior to a discussion on the topic. This is a great resource that can be easily adapted to suit your classroom and expectations. When you purchase this resource, you will be able to download 19 slide PowerPoint which is designed to help facilitate the card sort which is in a separate single page Microsoft Word document. The Word document includes a learning objective, instructions, two headings cards labeled ‘Pros / Advantages’ and ‘Cons / Disadvantages’ as well as sixteen information cards to be sorted. . The PowerPoint contains aims, objectives, information slides, templates, tasks and activities to support the card sort. These are both fully editable documents which can be customized if necessary to suit your students. I have also uploaded them as PDFs. Once students have completed the main task, they then have the option of writing the script for a speech expressing their own point of view on the subject. Both the PowerPoint and the worksheet has been beautifully illustrated throughout and the tasks and activities are suitable for the full range of abilities. The planning sheet and follow up literacy exercise will keep your students fully engaged whilst providing a useful piece of work for assessment or display. When you download this resource you will receive a fourteen slide PowerPoint, a four page worksheet, a planning sheet to help students plan their own invasion using the Blitzkrieg tactics and a literacy task sheet that can be used in lesson or set as homework. The PowerPoint is designed to accompany the worksheet and contains the aims, objectives, differentiated outcomes, starters, plenaries, pictures diagrams and links to video clips, that you will need to teach the lesson. Everything has also been uploaded as a PDF just in case you don’t have access to Microsoft Office. The key focus of the lesson is to look at how the Blitzkrieg tactics worked by looking at the different weapons and tactics used at each stage. The worksheet includes differentiated activities and questions, but the main activity is to get students to apply what they have learnt by planning their own Blitzkrieg attack in either pairs or groups using the supplied planning sheet. Everything is simply explained and you do not need to be an expert to be able to enjoy this memorable lesson. Ideally, I would spend two lessons on this topic, you can always miss out the questions or trim things here or there if you wanted to only spend one lesson, but that would be a shame but your students will love this topic! This beautiful crafted lesson has been designed to help students understand the daily challenges facing slaves living on a plantation either in the Carribbean or the southern United States. It is a shocking but engaging lesson that forms part of series on Britain and the Slave Trade . However, I would not recommend teaching this topic to a Year 7 class as it contains some very mature themes.
