This presentation is part of our Women in History series, celebrating female role models. It features a range of women who contributed to the goal of space travel, from Dorothy Vaughan and Katherine Johnson and their contribution to the maths of space travel, to the women such as Sally Ride and Nicole Aunapu Mann who literally reached for the stars.

This is an introduction to some of the women composers whose names may be less familiar than their male counterparts, despite the undoubted contribution they made. It offers a chance to find out more and begin to understand the struggles they had. It could be part of Women’s History Month, or serve to support Gatsby Benchmarks 3 and 4. Part of preparing post 16 students for life beyond sixth form includes looking at ways to become the responsible citizens of the future. As part of this it is important that they understand the threats to the environment and how they can contribute now and as adults to exacting changes. The presentation looks at the vital role of pollinators such as bees and the threats they are undergoing as well as ways to make a change. This presentation is a complete lesson with optional discussion points, but can easily be adapted to be used for an assembly by taking them out. It outlines some of the King’s history and education, his particular interests and looks at the pomp and ceremony of the day. There are links to a couple of videos - the Crowning of his mother, giving some idea of what to expect and how to make the royal quiche. It allows opportunities to discuss the line of succession and the cost and benefits of such a momentous event, while also looking at the community events and impact. There is a worksheet to accompany the discussion.

This presentation discusses the issues around Hate Crime and Disability, looking at what constitutes a disability and providing discussion points to consider various aspects of the question, including the question of advocacy and how to report or support someone experiencing such crimes. This presentation and accompanying discussion sheet and teaching notes are designed to give students the opportunity to discuss issues surrounding race and hate crime on a basis of race. They should gain a fuller understanding of who is affected, starting with the quiz on Forms (link to duplicate in the Teaching Notes) and through the links to extracts from news articles. The resource also includes links to videos which you can choose to include (timings included so you can estimate what will fit your time slot). There is a focus on racism in sport and a wider discussion of how trends in sport influence society and vice versa.

This lesson is designed for early in the academic year to support students new to sixth form to appreciate the value of academic reading. It coincides with various September dates such as Read a Book Day, International Literacy Day and E-Book Day. It comes with a preliminary quiz on Forms (link to duplicate in the Teaching Notes) and introduces students to what being a Sixth Form student involves, preparing them for further study and helping them to build a repertoire of reading to support later university applications. There are a range of opportunities for discussion and the opportunity to try out some wider reading sites if they have access to a device in the lesson. It could be worth sharing the presentation with both students and sixth form teachers to help with a unified approach. This lesson is designed to either coincide with Organ Donation Week in September or fit in with your general LifeSkills/PSHE programme. This resource/lesson looks at the trillion dollar maritime industry and the vital role it plays for the UK economy, the importance of being an island nation, helping students to consider what possibilities are available in this area, where to find out more and to get them thinking about the subject. While it could fit with World Maritime Day on 30 September, it could also fit at any time in your careers programme and could link with having a speaker from the industry or with World Oceans Day. This lesson is about raising that awareness and looks at why there needs to be an awareness month and provides opportunities for discussion around fundraising for charities, preventative meaures, the value of exercise and how to make it possible and even looks at considering working in this area and looking at related courses. It reminds that this is not just a female issue and the value of early detection.
