A lesson that looks at pregnancy and the challenges of having a child. (100 minutes long with small documentary at the end)

Planned for AQA 9-1 Specification This lesson looks at different explanations of poverty in the UK. It starts with a recap of key New Right ideas, followed by the cycle of deprivation and Charles Murray’s study into the Underclass. The lesson then looks at globalisation as a cause of poverty, finishing with a 12 mark question.

This is a lesson follows on from lesson 5 which was an introduction to Marxism and covered Capitalism and the Bourgoise. This lesson focuses on the Proletariats, Communism and Marx desire for revolution. This is a lesson suitable for either an introduction in sociology or as a refresher/revision for students before their GCSE. Suitable for non-specialists or a cover lesson. We had time at the end of term to show the full film of Juno. We used this to teach students about pregnancy, but about the varying choices if a student was to find themselves, or their partner, pregnant. Students watch the film, discuss and create a leaflet. Centres around the film Wall:E. As most children have seen this you probably won’t need to show the whole film (but is nice if you have a reward afternoon). The idea of the project is for the students to become advocates of something that will help the world and to create a campaign to stop it from happening e.g. preventing litter in school, raising awareness about water use. A great project that centres around the film Pay it Forward (not essential to watch, but makes for nice class discussions and gives them ideas). A lesson that follows on from an introduction to Functionalism. This lesson concentrates on Durkheim and introduces Parsons. This is a suitable lesson for an introduction to Sociology but also suitable for GCSE Revision.

Planned for AQA new spec (9-1) but suitable for most exam boards. This is a knowledge organiser that contains key thinkers, and a summary of the unit. It is a good revision tool, but students will obviously need to go into further detail on each of the key thinkers etc. Please leave a review if you download.

Planned for 9-1 AQA specification. This lesson can take 2 hours (double lesson) if you watch the documentary. Students complete an information sheet on what the Welfare State introduced after the war. They then look at New Right, Centre-Left, Marxist and Feminist perspectives on welfare. There are some extension questions for those who complete this. There is then a documentary about the benefits cap. The idea is to offer this as a possible solution, but for students to think about the implications of this. This documentary is not essential for the course, but it is a nice way for students to think about alternatives to the welfare state, or to consider if the welfare state is a worthwhile investment with taxation.

Students complete a timeline- first activity is to put the information above the timeline. Second activity is to consider if it reduced or increased inequalities looking at gender, ethnicity and social class.
