This card game is played like regular Rummy except instead of using the normal suits (diamond, spade, heart, clubs), the suits are x, x squared, y, y squared, and xy. Matches are only allowed with like terms so that instead of a normal Rummy play of a 2,3,4 of hearts, students must play 2x, 3x, and 4x for example. Cards are color coded to aid students who are struggling. This is a great way to keep the class engaged with a fun activity while still reinforcing an important Algebraic concept. This grammar packets contains 30 exercises for students to complete using subordinating conjunctions. Fifteen of these conjunctions are used, and students are able to practice knowing when a comma is needed and when it is not by filling in the blanks. Each pair of sentences uses the selected subordinating conjunction twice, once with it at the beginning of the sentence, and again in the middle. When a sentence begins with the selected word, a comma is placed in the middle of the sentence indicating that there will need to be separation between the independent and dependent clauses. On the other hand, no comma is included when the word is placed in the middle of the sentence. This activity will take your students grocery shopping. They are asked to help their friends by using proportions to tell the cost of certain items. In order to not go over budget, students are asked to set up a ratio or proportion, then subtract how much is spent from how much each friend began with. Therefore, in addition to applying proportional/ratio reasoning to solve real-world problems, students will also have to show knowledge of subtracting decimals as well as multiplication and division. This is a great STEM activity, and it is CCSS-Aligned by having students use higher level thinking skills to solve realistic word problems. To begin the activity, there is a background story and an example, and answer keys are included for each scaffolding piece.
