Roots, prefixes, and suffixes: Increasing vocabulary for GED Success

(0)
In this lesson, students review the following word parts in order to increase their vocabulary knowledge: cred, circum, fract, mal, centi, phob, chron, and centi. This packet begins with a general lesson on breaking apart words. Next, students are asked to try to define some words that have the word roots as they are introduced. Then, they are asked to draw pictures of the definitions to help them remember them. After that, they are given a long list of words that use their new vocabulary and challenged to see how many words they can use to write a paragraph. The fifth activity asks learners to make a word search with their new word list for a classmate to solve, followed by a color by code, word art, and a quiz to check retention. Supports Common Core and Reading Foundational Standards. No instructional lesson plan needed. Simply print and teach! This is a great activity for introducing or reviewing base words, prefixes and suffixes and an excellent resource for writing practice since it asks learners to apply their knowledge by writing sentences with new words. Proportions: Real-World Application/ Shopping Trip

(0)
This activity will take your students grocery shopping. They are asked to help their friends by using proportions to tell the cost of certain items. In order to not go over budget, students are asked to set up a ratio or proportion, then subtract how much is spent from how much each friend began with. Therefore, in addition to applying proportional/ratio reasoning to solve real-world problems, students will also have to show knowledge of subtracting decimals as well as multiplication and division. This is a great STEM activity, and it is CCSS-Aligned by having students use higher level thinking skills to solve realistic word problems. To begin the activity, there is a background story and an example, and answer keys are included for each scaffolding piece. Will require students to set up ratios or proportions, cross multiply to find the answer for unit rate questions. Students can put several of their best math skills to work, and this can be done as independent practice, small group instruction or whole group instruction. Great for use as an in-class assignment, homework assignment, review, extra credit, Bell Ringer, scaffolding activity, or Montessori activity.

Word Parts: Vocabulary/Roots and Affixes Lesson 1

(0)
This lesson explains the process of breaking words into parts to identify meaning. It gives several examples, including breaking down the longest word in the English language to derive a definition. Next, it introduces eight common roots and goes through several activities to help students memorize these. First, it asks learners to break down a few familiar words for meaning. Next, students are asked to draw the meanings as a mnemonic device. Then, students are given a list of words that use these roots and asked to write a paragraph using as many of those words as possible. Finally, there is a short matching quiz followed by a review of the entire lesson. This packet is great for introducing a vocabulary unit. Also good for morning work, homework, independent practice, test review/prep, enrichment, and remediation. I designed this lesson with my GED students in mind. The Science and Social Studies vocabulary are often challenging, and this lesson can help learners begin to see large words as a puzzle to solve, helping to reduce test anxiety. Finally, it makes learning vocabulary fun! Students are asked to solve the mystery of the new word with activities that ask them to use different parts of the brain, even their own artistic talents! Look for more lessons to come. Answer Keys included!

(0)
This card game is played like regular Rummy except instead of using the normal suits (diamond, spade, heart, clubs), the suits are x, x squared, y, y squared, and xy. Cards are color coded to aid students who are struggling. This is a great way to keep the class engaged with a fun activity while still reinforcing an important Algebraic concept. Wonderful game to play as a reward when students have finished their end-of-year testing. Works best in small groups. Can be used for review, remediation, or just to put a little variety in the classroom. In order to tally scores at the end of each hand, students will also practice their basic math computation skills. Sure to add some excitement and competition to your day! Enjoy!
