I'm a bit of a secondary generalist as I teach English (KS3 and IGCSE), Science (KS3 Science and GCSE Biology), KS3 Humanities and GCSE Environmental Management. My full unit of work for Part 2 and 3 of Trevor Noah’s book: Born a Crime (Part 1 uploaded previously). I did this unit with my mixed Stage 8/9 class but it can easily be adapted for older learners. Again, there are activities for each chapter but less explanation as some of the activities require them to use skills already covered in the Part 1 Powerpoint. This unit includes an assessment comprehension task and a final, discursive essay task with 3 essays to choose from. I did not include notes on Discursive essay writing but there are lots of great resources on this already on TES. Hope you find this useful! My class really loved this book from start to finish and it opened up so many interesting conversations.

Born a Crime Part 1: Scheme of Work

This Scheme of Work covers Part 1 of Trevor Noah’s autobiography: Born a Crime (The first 8 chapters). It includes tasks for each chapter, designed to cover reading and writing outcomes in a fun, engaging way. I did it with my mixed Grade 8/9 class over a few weeks but it can easily be adapted for older grades. This book is such a wonderful way to open up genuine, meaningful discussions about Apartheid and my class is really loving it so far. I have included vocabulary lists for each chapter. I’ve also taken some of the powerpoint slides and created classroom notes so that students don’t need to waste too much time writing them down. SOW’s for Part 2 and 3 will follow soon

6 Speaking and Listening tasks designed to be spread out over the course of a term. I designed this for my Stage 8 English class in Thailand where abilities ranged from a few words to almost fluent. Its a fun combination of games and presentations designed to get them speaking English in front of the class for variety of purposes. I have included a general rubric that can be easily adapted for each task. It is designed to give the student meaningful feedback that they can use to improve their speaking skills. Full Term study on Thailand. I developed this for my Stage 8 class as we are doing Thailand for the International Food Fair. I lived in Thailand for 2 years so most of the photos are mine and topics are based on my own experiences. My class really enjoyed this whole unit - they loved learning a bit of Thai and got really enthusiastic about the tasks! There are 9 topics in total and I have included worksheets/notes that cover everything on the Powerpoint so your students won’t need to write anything down. The Powerpoint is not heavy on text as I preferred to project images and diagrams and layer on detail in class discussion but there is more information on the worksheets. Most topics include a build in assessment task (Tasks on the PP and worksheets). The topics are: Introduction to Thailand Language and National Sport (Muay Thai) Festival and festival Culture Buddhism Climate and Weather Brief History of Modern Thailand Food Plants and Animals of Thailand End of Unit Quiz You can make it run longer or short depending on the ability of the class, how often you have Humanities and how much enrichment you add. A creative homework choice board to encourage students to try new things/learn skills after school. It has a range of activity options from gardening to fixing something that is broken. Students need to complete at least 1 task per week but can do more - they get a special prize at end of term if they complete the whole board. Parents must sign that they see student complete the task. I use this as my homeroom class’ Wednesday afternoon homework. Monday and Tuesday is Grammar and Arithmetic so it’s nice to do something a bit more creative in the middle of the week! Hope you find it useful.

Two very nice tasks to get students thinking about how particles move and interact during Diffusion. The first involves the teacher spraying air freshener and students drawing how the particles spread out. Task 2 involves leaving a gummy bear in water overnight and observing and recording any changes.

I found many speaking task evaluation sheets on the web were too specific or difficult to format. Thus, I developed this general evaluation sheet. It is designed to give the student meaningful feedback that they can use to improve their speaking skills. It is also easy to modify to any task or theme. I hope you find it useful!

This is a Power Point Presentation which explains what a Political Party is and how political parties appeal to voters with different strategies. It includes a task where students split into groups to form their own political parties - complete with name, slogan, symbol, manifesto and campaign poster/advert I used this at the end of term with my students and it was a great, meaningful time filler. The students had lots of fun but also came up with some great ideas!

This is a class task in the style of a ‘Model UN’ debate. The class is divided into groups which represent the USA, Britain and France. These groups must work together to develop a peace treaty to officially end WW1. The terms of peace must specifically deal with what punishments/sanctions should be placed on Germany to prevent them from trying to start a war again. The teacher plays the role of ‘Germany’ as she is not allowed to speak or contribute to the conference in any way (I jokingly placed a symbolic gag over my mouth for part of the lesson) I ran this following on from a lesson about the losses each of the ‘Big 3’ suffered during WW1. I also really encouraged my students to get into character as their countries and imagine what they (the country) would want rather than what they (the student) would want for themselves and Germany.

This is a half term project designed to run simultaneously with a unit on Weather and Climate. Students have to collect data from a school weather station (or alternative) as well as track and make notes of major weather events in their local environment and happening in the news. After a 5 week data collection period, there is a series of straightforward tasks that need to be completed. The task was designed to be used in Krabi, Thailand but can be adapted for any location with minimal effort.
