Holocaust- The Devil's Arithmetic

Questions to accompany viewing of the movie "The Devil's Arithmetic" which is a Holocaust story that helps students understand why we need to remember- designed for Year 10 History. Free resource, I do not own rights to movie, which is available through the link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QhDhW2YPsrU at the time of posting this, but changes to this URL are beyond my control (if this happens). I recommend you try and purchase a copy of the movie yourself. It is also currently available on Clickview Online which is an audio-visual resource site for Australian teachers (if your school subscribes).

Positive Message Project

(0)
A simple idea but one that can lead to several lessons of solid collaborative work from students as they plan and create a video or other presentation with a positive message- great as an end of term project; could be adapted to almost any subject but Geography, History and English are obvious ones for this.

Main Causes of World War Two

(1)
Information and questions related to the more significant causes of World War Two with a nice memory jogger ('VHAL') that works well in practice with students. Aimed at Year 9 History Australian Curriculum but adaptable to senior students. Also includes a modified version that was created to suit a student with restricted movement.

Roman Mosaics hands-on History Activity and Tutorial Ancient Rome

(1)
An end of year activity I put together from an amalgam of online resources and my own additions . Great as an end of year History/craft activity/ hands-on history activity where students learn about Roman mosaics, engage in related thinking and discussion and then make their own using paper. Simple material required- white paper plus a variety of other coloured papers. I have used it with great success with Yr 7 but it would also work for younger students and students up to Year 9 .

Pompeii (movie) questions Ancient Romans

(1)
Questions/activities to be used in conjunction with the movie 'Pompeii' (2014)- nice as an end of year activity to complement studies of Ancient Romans. Intended for 7 History (with appropriate parental permission for the movie), but could be adapted for other year groups. This works best as an adjunct to more comprehensive study of ancient Rome preceding this movie.

Yr 7 Egypt Creation Story (with a twist) Literacy & History Activity

Egyptian creation story activity. Print pages 1-4 two pages into one. Pages 1-2 half per student. Pages 3-4 both sides to each student. Give out the word list part first and have students fill it in. Then give them pages 3-4 to fill out their story. Read the 2nd part by guided reading for meaning using 'super 6' strategies. Students then complete the questions to demonstrate their understanding. Fun and engaging.

Twisted History/ Literacy Activity USA Planned to Nuke the Moon

Fun and engaging activity that could be used as a lesson starter or part of a range of lesson activities. Targeted at Year 10 History Cold War studies but suitable for all high school students. Part 1- give students the word list sheet only for them to fill out (print the first two pages 2 into 1- half per student ) and get them to fill it out (guide as necessary). Part 2- give them the next 2 pages (print two into one again two sides per student) and get them to write the list of words they created in order to make a twisted version of this history story. They can then share their story with a friend and complete the questions. ENJOY! Students love this activity. The same idea could be used with a range of history stories (but pick the text and audience to ensure it is respectful where appropriate). Already weird chapters of history work best for this.

9 History Overview: British Empire, Colonisation, Imperialism, Nationalism

(1)
Part of the 9 History Overview- a variety of lesson activities including drawing of student's own abstract world map, thinking, cause and effect etc. Focuses on key student skills and concepts with a student reflection at the end. Quality activities that translate to real-life skills (what we are really aiming for as teachers), but provided without fee in the interests of student learning and teacher collegiality.

Visual glossary of some of the key architecture terminology of Pompeii and Herculaneum (does not include the Forum or temples). Students should be able to identify these features and use the terminology in context. Most images taken on a recent visit to Pompeii and Herculaneum.

Vikings Introduction Overview

A tutorial and related worksheet and activities to introduce the Depth Study option 1a (Western and Islamic World: Vikings) Yr 8 History. Some parts have been based on a TES Vikings introduction I found on this site (but I significantly adjusted and augmented it to add more detailed overview information and active learning activities). I have created and added a related worksheet and related learning activities. I have tried to make it a much more active learning activity than it was in its original form. Modified version is also attached.
