Year 7: Caesar Murder Mystery (Lesson 4)

(1)
A murder mystery lesson. This is aimed at getting students to work out facts and use evidence to work out the truth. The lesson was super engaging for both my top and bottom sets. Can be taught two ways either place the information around the rooms and students walk around and try and find it/ or place all the evidence into a pack (brown envelope, can place stickers on the envelope, students loved the little touches made it feel like a real CSI investigation). Students then work as a group trying to find out the story, this allows a competition element. The lesson ends with a write up of an account a writing frame is provided.

This lesson works well after studying how William kept control. There is a GCSE styled question with sentence starters for the less able. There are challenge tasks to stretch the top end. Print off the evidence pack and either put it in an envelope or plastic wallet share them out between groups/tables. Make it a competition for students to work out the events of what happened.

The America topic has been divided up into each decade with a timeline of key events and key statistics for each, as well as a separate one for Women’s liberation and Civil Rights. I use these for recap tasks where students complete what they know and use these to DIRT and improve their answer. I have also printed of a couple and laminated and key changed together for students to take home for revision purposes.

Aimed at Year 8: This lesson is an interactive lesson that gets students to investigate the Victorian Home. The lesson gets students to choose a room by clicking on parts of the house and its takes them inside the room with pictures and information. This works work in a computer room where students can make their way through it at their own pace. However, I’ve done it in a normal classroom and its worked just as well. There is a worksheet for them to complete, though many in my class made notes on their own. There is also a writing frame for the question at the end for those that need help with writing.
Mummy Attack Timer

Mummy Attack Timer

(0)
A timer that works well for spotlight and quickfire questioning. Choose one student to sit in front of the projected screen whilst other students then have a minute to ask as many questions before the mummy moves forward and attacks. This works well for a competition to see how many questions each student can answer. Have introduced a leader board for each class. Comes with sound effects with Egyptian tomb themed music which can be switched off if desired.
Plenary Battle

Plenary Battle

A great way to end a lesson. Split the class into two teams then either ask questions to the class and which ever team answer gets to attack the other person. The first to three attacks win. Each attack is animated and with sound affects. All year groups have loved this. I’ve also made it into a debate battle where teams aim to out debate each other with a change to attack the other.
