Christmas in Literature! A fun sequence of activities based around three extracts: A Christmas Carol The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone Tasks include analysis, annotation and comparisons and build to a creative writing task. It should cover two lessons so perfect for the last week of term! Mostly suitable for KS3 but could be adapted to KS4.

The first 1-2 lessons focus on analysing the John Lewis Monty the Penguin Christmas advert, focusing on tone, message and mis-en-scene. Students then have the chance to design their own Christmas advert which can then be presented or performed on your last lesson. Resources are fully adaptable and can be used for both key stage 3 and 4 students. Builds analytical skills, includes some media terminology, facilitates oracy and group work and builds to a creative project.

The powerpoint resource goes through key contextual factors affecting Shakespeare’s choices including superstitions, King James’ own belief in witches, and mythology. It also offers opportunities for close analysis in conjunction with the A3 hand out. This is a medley of the most important sections of the play incorporating the witches. Great for extract practice or quote learning. The lesson builds to students completing an essay on the function of the witches which could be done for homework or in class.
