This is a comprehensive list of words with contractions that can be used for classroom display. They in large print and categorised into word families for easy identification around the classroom. This is a useful display for children as they are no longer allowed to be given too much spelling support from the teacher. There are a couple of poems to embed the contracted words that children could use to learn poetry for pleasure. I have found this a invaluable aid to teach spelling to reach the expected standards in English. Suitable for the new curriculum. I hope you found this resource useful as I haven't found anything appropriate for contracted words as yet. I didn't want any more banners and flags in the room. The words are very large but could be made more accessible if photocopied on to A3.

Year 2 Reading and Writing Poetry Preview Suitable for GD readers and promote quality reading experiences for all Expected pupils. This is a preview of resources available in the shop. It has an array of classic poetry with comprehensions. The sound collector has targeted comprehension for higher ability (working at greater depth) and then differentiated down so that all the class can access and enjoy classic poetry. Children answer literal, inference and evaluative questions about the poem. After that , they spend a day creating their own verses using similar pattern structures. There are also other many fun and enjoyable poems to learn and perform by Roger McGough, and Valerie Bloom- such as The River, and other sound poems. Children can recite these poems from memory, perform them to an audience and answer comprehension questions. Children will learn how to identify rhyming words and generate their own. They will understand language techniques used by the poet and identify the patterned structures to write their own verse in a similar style. This fun resource can also be used as a poetry unit during English main teaching or guided reading. Please see the shop for complete unit of work and planning with resources.

Great visual resources suitably differentiated for year 1. Read the Blue Balloon and sequence the pictures and use time connectives to retell. Write a list and captions using words to describe the balloon changing shape. Link to the new curriculum and used expanded noun phrases and or adjectives. Use phonics and sounds to match words to pictures. As creative starters to the unit -teachers can write a message on a helium balloon from each child and release in outdoor playground - ‘This balloon is indestructable. Please look after it!’ Wait and see if anyone replies to the message. Blow up a balloon and release in hall for inspiration to dance and movement in P.E. Also includes ideas for problem solving in maths using balloons as inspiration.

Year 2 Writing unit The children can use this resources to research all about the London Olympic Venues and the Torch relay. Children can be given parts of the information to think of their own caption or headings. It will support them to write a non-fiction piece of writing. It can also be used as part of Geography to find out about in London. This unit was written to celebrate the arrival of the Olympics in 2012. However, it can still be used to compare changes in local area/London, how Olympics compare, or in general to read around Sports Day.

Year 2 Narrative Unit to inspire greater depth and mastery writing skills. An excellent bundle of resources suitable for year 2 and year 3. Includes 5 weeks of planning for English and 5 separate grammar exercises within context of the book to be taught alongside it. A cold writing task begins with writing a narrative(fable) of a fox. An exemplar text is provided (re-written in the past tense to imitate and innovate). There are also other opportunities for independent creative writing pieces integrated in the unit so that children can practice skills and rehearse them independently. Book talk and comprehension activities are also included. The language in the text is ambitious as well as appropriate for children to achieve the TAF statements for the year 2 curriculum. This unit can be adapted to suit lower KS2. Links to films and short clips provide opportunities for non-fiction writing e.g. Recount of how fires start in forests or bush lands. If children have previous experiences of writing instructions- they can apply this by writing 'How to mend a broken wing' instructions or make wings for Magpie to fly in DT. This document is to support teachers with feedback and marking. There is an example Powerpoint of good quality feedback and the pedagogy behind it - with children's work, next step marking, self assessment ideas and positive feedback language. There is also a bank of 'Next Step Marking' ideas that have been created to support teachers in their feedback to children that allow independence in revising their work. If marking is over explicit, then parts of the writing may be disqualified. It is highly recommended not to over mark and train children to understand teacher feedback e.g. Use varied sentences for effect on the reader/audience (means that the child has to use questions, commands, statements and exclamatory sentences). The detail in brackets is displayed in the classroom and given as verbal feedback to child. They then go away and improve their writing accordingly. This documents will give you more open bank of statements to use in your next steps (so moderators can't say the feedback was too explicit), and not use that piece of work as evidence for the child meeting the expected criteria (or above greater depth). Suitable for KS1, but can be easily adapted to Year 3 also. Hope you find it useful for your teams and use it to promote independent editing, revising and improvement of work. It has been cleverly organized and written so that all children can access the wonderful story. The resource is designed to be taught as a whole a class activity. The teacher supports reading of the text and children answer questions collaboratively, and learn from each others responses. Teachers are required to teach skimming and scanning techniques, read around the word, answer literal and clue questions, as well as evaluative summary questions. The resource has high expectations of all children and builds high level vocabulary. This will support you to show evidence of greater depth text. It s important to have class copies of text for group discussion.

The Day the Crayons Quit is a working at the expected standard reading text for Year 2. This guided reading unit is a wonderful text to use to engage reluctant readers. This reading unit is designed to support the new English Reading Framework. It is suitable for comprehension with looking, clue and thinking questions and encourages children to talk through their answers using a reciprocal approach. The resources have been designed for children to read a few letters at a time and answer literal and inference based questions. There are also other links such as poetry about crayons so that children can experience a range of genres and respond to them. Teachers can allow children to read letters written in the style of the book so there is a 'I quit' letter from the teacher for children to respond to. This work can help towards moderation and assessment purposes and evidence at the end of the year. The unit was taught over 3 weeks and includes visuals for additional activities such as predict what the crayons are saying in speech bubbles. Year 2 Writing Narrative Where the Wild Things Are Film and Book Exemplar text to introduce children to narrative writing - called Voyage and Return. Both the film and book are used simultaneously to learn about the main character and write a narrative. An excellent powerpoint with more than 15 slides demonstrates how to write descriptive scenes from the story, a narrative, character traits, and a success ladder. The exemplar text meets the requirements of English New Curriculum objectives. Explicit reference has been made to grammatical features including varying sentence types, conjunctions, words with suffixes, and the use of common exception words. Teachers may use the text in the imitation stage, innovate to where the main character meets a new wild thing, and then invent their own voyage and return narrative. An excellent film and text to use to promote boys writing.

This is a fantastic way to include a dinosaur topic in your English unit. The resource contains an exemplar text (Instructions) with visuals aimed at the Exceeding in EYFS or Working at in year 1. The children are introduced to the story first - Harry and the bucket full of dinosaurs. It then leads on to learning instructional exemplar text (imitate) about 'How to take care of a pet dino.' This is supported by a text map to sequence and internalise language. The grammar features included are time connectives and prepositional language. The exemplar text is differentiated for SEN or EAL learners who may have little English, or limited writing ability. The unit lends itself well to imitation, innovation and invention. The children may go onto writing instructions for 'How to care for yourself ' or 'How to get ready in the morning.' They may write instructiins about caring for a class pet. There are lots of opportunities to do cross curricular and independent writing opportunities from this book e.g. my first day shopping. Excellent text for relluctant boy writers. ENJOY.

The Tunnel by Anthony Browne is a fantastic resource written for guided reading sessions that use a carousel format. Planning included teacher questioning as well as comprehension for children to access independently. Excellent text to use because Week 1 Guided questions and activities are also available in the shop. The following unit includes the following:- Teacher looking, clue, thinking questioning planning Work on high order vocabulary like alternatives for verb ‘said’ Alliteration and commas in a list Response activities to promote deeper understanding of characters Used to teach children high order questioning during guided reading session. There are opportunities to develop and explore characters thoughts, feelings, emotions and motivations through dialogue and speech. Vocabulary is enhanced through extending vocabulary through description and alliteration.
