Year 2 Science Plants Unit
Teach and model to children how to set up a fair test to find out how seeds germinate the fastest. The first question is do seeds need light? Children then go on to ask their own enquiry questions about seed germination and follow this through. Some examples are ,
do they need warmth?
do they need air?
do they need nutrients?
do they need water?
do they need air?
This planning and PowerPoint has excellent examples of how to follow the lead of the children. It demonstrates how each group could be setting up their own enquiry and then feed back to the rest of the class. They compare each others fair test and think of follow up questions. Suitable for the new year 2 science curriculum and used to receive a quality mark.
Year 2 Guided Reading Comprehension- Information Text All About Foxes.
A detailed text all about foxes allows children to read at length for greater depth.
Children who are working at the expected have the text broken down into smaller chunks for easier accessibility.
This resource can be used in isolation as well as supporting material for the Fox unit by Margaret Wild- if its being taught in English.
The guided reading questioning included looking, inference, evaluative, and overall text questions. It is suitable for the New English curriculum and will suit teaching over 2 to 3 weeks or as extensive revision purposes leading up to SATs in year 2.
It is recommended that greater depth children move onto reading Fantastic Mr Fox after this unit is completed.
An additional Bats comprehension has been included for your use if you are teaching nocturnal animals.
Thank you for choosing this resource and I hope you find it valuable.
Year 2 working at greater depth and mastery level. This challenge is suitable for HAPS to challenge them to record in tables( by creating their own) and think about how to work systematically. It challenges them to begin looking for patterns and write a simple formula to estimate the 10th number. This is an excellent, engaging and fun way to see children working at greater depth level and how they apply their skill of reasoning. The challenge asks children to make a straw house and then estimate how many are needed for a street of 10. They are extended to look at rockets and create their own straw challenge for others to complete. Great team building exercise. Can also be used with children working within the expected level if, practical straws are provided alongside a table template.
Year 2 Target Tracker Users. Assessing without levels for the end of KS1 Target Tracker users. Linked to the Information Text Unit All About Whales- also available in the shop. HAPS

Africa Year 2 unit about stories in a cultural setting. If you are looking for a new unit of work with excitement, culture, story, film, art links and research, - then look no further. This is a 3 week unit of work to link with a topic on Africa (or it can be taught stand alone). The planning included opportunities to learn an exemplar rewritten and condensed text using the ‘Masai and I’ story as inspiration. Children have the opportunity to imitate and innovate and then invent their own text. The resources included have excellent visuals to research from. Suitable links to real life Masai have been given as short film extracts to take notes about the cultural lifestyle, food, pets, schools of this tribe. This is an excellent and interesting unit to engage boys. Other links such as art have been made clear - whereby children learn about Kente cloth as worn by people in Kenya, create a traditional necklace and paint Masai dancers. As well as this, a guided reading text has been included in the unit to support reading for ‘working at’. There are also some additional resources called writing targets that can be edited to suit class needs. Enjoy and please leave a review.
An excellent way of investigating science practically. children will undertake a comparative test to find out which material is the best to make Max dry. Otherwise it can be used for English literacy non fiction unit. Writing with a voice, with audience in mind and for a purpose is the most crucial change in the new English framework. See the document to know how to teach the difference between audience and purpose. Teachers have been given examples from the year 2 units of work in this document. It explains how to do a Tweak it Task to show the purpose of writing can change from entertainment, to inform, or to instruct. For example, here is a narrative of an adventure story- now change it to instructions on how to go on an adventure - (the purpose here has changed - and this will effect word choices, tone, structure of writing). Hope you find it useful to explain to the younger ones. Suitable class teachers and English Leaders for CPD writing across the school although examples given are from year 2.
