This lesson is part of a complete suite of resources for the Eduqas specification, but can easily be adapted to fit other exam boards (OCR, AQA, WJEC, Edexcel).
Lesson 6 gives a brief overview of key historical, social and cultural contexts to both The IT Crowd and Friends. Then, through a 987media mock-up of a Component 2 Section A exam page, students are introduced to the format of, and expectations of, assessed analytical writing relating to contexts of TV sitcoms. Students make notes on an unseen extract from the set texts as per the exam guidelines. After completing a 10-mark 10-minute exam answer relating to this unseen extract, students then peer-assess each other's work using a student-friendly marking criteria worksheet.

There is continual reference to a number of set texts that are expected to be covered as part of the reformed 9-1 GCSE in Media Studies, with a primary focus on advertising. As well as examining historical, social, cultural and political contexts, by undertaking this scheme students will develop their understanding of the key concept of ideology and how to identify messages embedded within a variety of media products.

Lesson 7 presents a list of key social and cultural changes between the 1950s and the 1980s and the impact that these shifts have on the content of media products. In the same vein as lesson 4, students analyse the representation of gender in a 1980s advert (for Volkswagen Golf) in order to identify the social ideologies present before comparing and contrasting this to the music video for 'Rio' by Duran Duran. This lesson also includes a worksheet resource which breaks down the different media language areas into more accessible chunks when analysing a moving image media product.

Lessons 11 and 12 introduce students to a 1,000 word comparative essay task which will be marked in line with the new Eduqas assessment criteria. Students annotate CD covers in preparation for this extended writing assessment.
