This lesson if the first of 2 lessons on how William controlled England. Students first of all look at problems faced by William and suggest how he could solve these problems. There is a demonstration of the feudal system before students illustrate this in their books and describe the system. They then judge the effectiveness of the feudal system. This lesson is differentiated: Blue (most able), Yellow (able-mid), Green, (least able).

This lesson builds on content about how William the Conqueror and the Normans changed England. My students have looked at three areas: violence and fear, castles and the feudal system. Students look at a model answer and deconstruct it, a live model is completed and then there are independent activites. There is a literacy focus of noun phrases.
