PE, Numeracy and communication skills mix in this fun active relay fitness game for Primary (Key Stage 2, especially Year 4, 5 and 6). Great for outdoor learning or special events such as National Maths Week, to have children practising mental calculations in another curriculum area. Alternatively, use this activity as a warm up to add variety to your normal Physical Education programme. Good teamwork and communication should be encouraged as teammates help each other to work out the calculations and guide each other to the possible answer cards, while navigating around the hidden Exercise Cards (which force the team to divert onto a variety of athletic challenges!). 4 files are included: large versions of game boards and cards in PDF, small versions, plus editable exercise card files (both sizes - in PPT), in case you wish to add some of your own exercise ideas. Print and laminate the boards and cards you require. No equipment is necessary and the game can be played in a gym hall or outside space. Answer key included.
INSTRUCTIONS (Also included within the file):
Split students into up to 7 groups, giving each a calculation board.
Shuffle the number cards and as many exercise cards (12 included) as you wish, spreading them out face down at the other end of the playing area. You may wish to remove the answer cards for any board not in use.
Teams send one person at a time running to collect a card. On each go, students must only turn over one card. If they know it is not an answer to any calculations on their board, they replace it, or else they can bring it back to their team to check and the next team member can replace it if it is not required, before collecting another card.
If a player turns over an Exercise Card, they must bring it back to their group and the whole team must perform the stipulated exercises. When all members are finished the exercise, the next runner can set off for another card.
The winners are the first team to cover all their calculations with the correct answer cards.
There are two of each number card, as each answer features on two boards, helping to ensure a faster game. To speed up the game or to add an extra element, include as many Pass Cards as you like. If children turn over a Pass Card they can place it over any calculation they want, for instance if they are finding a calculation too difficult or if there is an answer card they are struggling to find. For differentiation, use mixed ability groups or else grant certain groups extra pass cards to cover more challenging calculations.
To ensure a smooth game, circulate with the answer key for at-a-glance checking. If groups have accidentally taken another group’s answer card, ensure they quickly replace it so as not to hamper the progress of other teams.

This active, printable KS2 Mental Maths starter activity for multiplication of three factors is a treasure hunt / scavenger hunt or relay type game, to be played in teams, with differentiation built in. It’s ideal as a whole class warm up or plenary at Year 4, Year 5 and 6, perhaps when focusing on multiplication, especially the associative property / law of multiplication. It can be played multiple times in a lesson or across several lessons as groups can use different card sets each time. Teams complete a treasure hunt-type chain of three single digit numbers multiplication calculations, followed by a ‘Find the Target Number’ mental maths challenge, using a mixture of the four operations. There are 54 double-sided cards, forming sets of 6 cards for 9 teams.
A key feature is the chance to involve lower ability students in a fun whole class activity to give them a boost of confidence without it being obvious their calculations are less challenging (3 of the sets are at an easier level). Full instructions for teacher and pupils is included, along with solutions.

You can print and laminate the cards in batches of 3 sets, so if you don’t require them all, you needn’t print them. The cards should be printed double-sided (they’ve been laid out to facilitate this). I print by selecting the ‘2-Sided Short Edge (Top)’ option. However, if you can only print one-sided, print all the even-numbered pages, replace the paper, and print the odd-numbered pages on the back.
Give each team their ‘Start’ card. Spread out all other cards, answer side up. You may wish to remove cards from any set not being used, although this is not necessary. On your signal, teams turn over their Start card and complete the calculation. Each team sends one person to collect the correct answer card, on the other side of which will be their next question and a letter to confirm which team it belongs to. Ensure teams immediately replace any cards not marked with their letter. The process continues until the team have answered all five calculations. On the other side of the final answer card will be a target number, which teams must make, using the numbers printed in boxes in the bottom right corner of 3 of their cards. Use all 3 numbers and only once each, using any of the 4 operations. The first to make their target number wins! One possible answer for each of the target challenges is printed on the solution cards.

This is a Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 Key Stage 2 (KS2) - Y4 / Y5 / Y6. Maths activity for multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000: an engaging, differentiated set of 20 printable spooky gameboards for starters, early finishers activities, revision etc. It’s an aspect of maths that students often forget but after they’ve played a few games of Crazy Doors, with its attractive board and the scenario of being chased by trolls through a swampy forest, it’ll hopefully stick in their mind! Versions with no backgrounds have been included for eco-printing. Great for Halloween - or at any time of the year (as it doesn’t mention Halloween on it). There’s a multiplication and division by 10, 100 and 1000 version and one for lower ability or younger pupils for multiplying and dividing by just 10 and 100. 10 game boards are included for each (it’s the same layout for each board but with different numbers on the doors).
Each group of 2-6ish players requires a game board, a Doors Targets board (2 included, one for each version), an instruction card (included), dice, counters and mini whiteboards (or paper) and pens. They throw the dice to make a 2-digit starting number and the aim of the game is to change that number by multiplying/dividing by 10, 100 and 1000 to meet the requirements printed on doors in the forest. If they meet the requirements, they may go through the door. They have to throw a counter onto the Doors Target board to find out what they will be multiplying/dividing by - they’ll need to think about the best one to aim at and then also hope their throwing is accurate or they could get held up at a particular door for a while!
This fun activity should also consolidate understanding of place value, including decimals. I’ve added a place value grid for convenience in case any students require this support.

FRENCH MENTAL MATHS SETS:
Combine mental maths agility with French number learning in this fun activity. The three sets cater for different ages, abilities and experiences of French. Giving children the chance to use French numbers (Les Nombres / Les Numeros ) in calculations can build understanding, recall and confidence in using them.
Includes:
one 30-card set focusing on numbers to 40
one 30-card set focusing on numbers to 60
one 30 card set focusing on numbers to 100
There is no particular starting card as each loop is continuous but all sets do have ‘un’ (one) in them and you might want to start them here. Each set has a different coloured border but if not printing in colour you might want to print on different coloured card or paper so as not to mix them up when using more than one set.
SIMPLE NUMBER MATCHING SETS:
Again, you can start at any point in the loops. There’s one 30-card set for 0-40 and another for 0-100.

Key Stage 2 (KS2) area printable activities - fun, strategic games of Four in a Row for consolidation and revision of area of rectangles, squares, right-angled triangles and compound / composite shapes. Differentiated 3 ways. Originally designed for Y5 and Y6 but it might suit some older groups (KS3) too. In Scotland, use for Second Level Maths, Primary 6 and 7.
The boards were originally designed to be printed in A3 and I recommend this so that children have sufficient space to record the area of each 2D shape. Taking turns to go, children use a different coloured whiteboard pen to write the area of a shape in the appropriate box on the grid. If using the same colour as their opponent, they could add their initial to the box.
When someone achieves 4 in a row, answers could be checked using the ANSWER GRIDS, or by using a calculator.
1-star version - area of rectangles, squares and right-angled triangles. No conversion required.
2-star - area of rectangles, squares and right-angled triangles. More challenging calculations. Some conversion required between centimetres, metres etc. Includes decimal lengths and breadths.
3-star - area of rectangles, squares, right-angled triangles and compound / composite shapes. Some conversion required. Includes decimal lengths and breadths and more challenging calculations. Some of the compound shapes require children to work out the length of a side, using other given sides, before they can work out the area.
Children will be able to do some of the calculations mentally but could work out more challenging ones before writing in the answer on the grid.

Starting at the mouse and working their way around the card in a spiral, children write the answer to each calculation in the box, creating a running total. The final answer is printed next to the cheese in the middle of the card so they can see if they have correctly completed it. If not, children can check to see where they have gone wrong.

A fun, strategic activity for consolidating this key money / financial / shopping skill. Ideal for maths lessons or Money Week skills practice. Laminate and use again and again. Children work as pairs against pairs or one against one to get 4 correct answers in a row - horizontally, vertically or diagonally. It works especially well if they roll a dice to find which column they must pick a calculation from (columns numbered 1-6). If there are no questions left in a column, skip a go or roll again. Imagining that they pay for each item with £10, pupils use a different coloured whiteboard pen to record on the board the change due for each of their transactions or add an initial or symbol if both teams are using the same colour. I recommend printing in A3 but A4 is okay too. The LA versions have a star next to the title. Print on different coloured card or paper if required.
LOOP GAME / FOLLOW ME CARDS / DOMINOES
A 20-card set that can start with any card. A child reads the ‘I spend’ part first as they make their ‘purchase’ with others working out if they have the relevant ‘I give you’. Use as a game for groups or as a whole class starter or plenary (in pairs if necessary). LA pupils could be given less challenging cards so they can still experience success.

PLACE VALUE GAMES:
Use as printed worksheets or else laminate (or use in dry-wipe sleeves) and complete with whiteboard pens
Instead of playing in pairs, you might form small groups - pairs could play against pairs instead of one-versus-one and you might appoint a checker who can adjudicate (and then swap roles for the next game). Consider enlarging to A3 for larger groups.
There is a mixture of Make the Biggest Number, Make the Smallest Number and Greater or Less Than games
Every turn, players can place the digit they throw on any row or column, until there are no vacant boxes remaining, prolonging the uncertainty! Keeping an eye on each other’s numbers as they form, players will begin to spot new tactics; for instance they might notice that a 1 placed in a thousands place might not be so costly if there’s a 9 in the ten thousands place, depending on what their opponent is doing on their grid. They can also practise saying their completed numbers aloud at the end.
If you don’t have a 0-9 dice, the games still work with a 1-6 dice. Alternatively:
Use 0-9 spinners (I have included black and white and colour templates for your convenience) if you wish to make some
Use digit cards (basic digit cards included in the file)
Use a pack of playing cards (use Aces as 1 and Jacks as 0, put aside the Kings and Queens; shuffle the pack and take one card in turn)
Instructions are printed on the boards.
PLACE VALUE CROSS NUMBER PUZZLES:
2 for numbers up to ten thousands
2 for numbers up to hundred thousands
2 for numbers up to millions
Differentiation: For each of 5, 6 and 7-digit numbers the first puzzle is for practising reading the word version and writing the digit version in the grid, while the second, more challenging puzzle for each involves adding and subtracting from large numbers (increase by 1000, take away five hundred thousand etc)
Works in a similar way to a crossword puzzles but with numbers entered into the grid

FRENCH TELLING THE TIME PRESENTATIONS AND INTERACTIVE GAMES:
In addition to introducing key vocabulary and phrases, this presentation includes activities such as:
Practice slides with digital and analogue clocks
Oral activities using time in context
6 rounds of an interactive Hexagons Game (where teams compete to translate vocab and phrases and make a path through the grid) - includes two rounds where time is to the nearest minute instead of 5 minute intervals, to stretch groups needing more challenge.
16 rounds of an interactive Reveal the Picture Game (where teams compete to remove parts of a grid to reveal the hidden time in the image)
Please note that most of the text in the PowerPoint is editable, however the images are not. Many slides in the original PowerPoint version feature answers that appear when you click, for students to respond. An additional PDF version is included. While the PDF version does not retain the ability for teachers to reveal answers by clicking, it will still help you introduce and review this topic if you do not have PowerPoint where you work. Please note that the Hexagons and Reveal the Picture games are not compatible with PDF and are therefore omitted from that version.

FRENCH TELLING THE TIME WORKSHEETS AND PUZZLES:
SUPPORT PAGES: Word mats to display or print for students who require it, for 12 and 24-hour time, and in black and white too. Please note that these support pages are also contained in my printable games packet for this topic.
WORKSHEETS: 10 worksheets (with answer keys), all in both 12 AND 24-hour versions, and all differentiated at least two ways using a star system. The 1-star version is the least challenging, for lower ability, younger or less experienced students and almost all of these focus on quarter hour intervals. Many of the 2-star worksheets are in five minute intervals. For Worksheet 4, the 1-star version is in five minute intervals and the 2-star is to the nearest minute, to provide variety and extra challenge. The two “À quelle heure…?” worksheets (Les Activités / Le Transport) are differentiated 3 ways.
PUZZLES: There’s an airport puzzle, hidden word puzzle, and maze. The airport puzzle is differentiated; the other two are not. The maze also does not have a 24h version.
FRENCH TELLING THE TIME PRINTABLE GAMES:
Four in a Row: There are 4 boards: word version and digital ones for both the 12 and 24-hour clocks. Print and laminate the ones you want for repeated use with dry-wipe markers. Enlarge if using with larger groups. First to get four in a row - vertically, horizontally or diagonally - wins. Dice required.
“J’ai…Qui a…?” Loop Game: A speaking game for groups or the whole class. Print and laminate for repeated use. The 36 cards form a continuous loop so it doesn’t matter which one you start with. There are 3 versions – the first has an analog clock, the second has a digital clock, while the third version features French 24-hour time.
Active Oral Game: Ideal for the whole class. Print and laminate the cards. Students walk around the room, asking and answering what time it is in French, using the time printed on their cards. The first pair to find the matching cards wins. There are 2 versions: an analog clock version for 12-hour time and a digital one you can use for 24-hour time.
Serpents et Echelles Board Game: Print and laminate the board. It works like normal Chutes and Ladders / Snakes and Ladders, only with students calling out French words when they land on them. Answer key included.
Sentences Board Game: Fun for oral practice. Board 1 is a simpler, 12-hour digital version, just in quarter hour intervals. Board 2 is for analog 12-hour time in 5 minute intervals and board 3 is for 24-hour time. Print and laminate. Instructions on board. Answer key included.
Square Jigsaw: Laminate and cut the 16 puzzle pieces or have students cut up the black and white version. For an extra challenge, the letters on the outside edge of the puzzle form a related sentence. 2 versions, one for 12-hour time and one for 24-hour time. Students match analog clocks or digital times with French word version of time.
Counter Throw Time Target Game: Combines math and French! Students throw a counter onto target each round and add elapsed time to their card in a race to finish a 10-step journey in the shortest time. They must read aloud their new time in French at each stage. Black and white target included.

Similar to codebreaker puzzles, a maths-related word is revealed after completing calculations. Each puzzle contains a grid. Within each box is a calculation and a letter. Students circle any boxes containing errors. Then they assemble letters from the circled boxes to reveal the hidden maths word. Puzzles can be completed individually or in pairs / groups. In some puzzles there is an extension question / challenge linked to the hidden word, which in some cases may require a little research if time.
Students often forget or avoid checking their work for errors so it’s great to get them carefully checking in these puzzles. Spotting common errors may help them remember to check their own work and help them avoid common errors themselves.

MORE INFO ABOUT THE WRITE AND WIPE TRAILS:
They can be used by individuals or you could have pairs or small groups racing against each other to complete trails accurately. Very flexible and great to have in the classroom all year round to use as a meaningful last minute filler.
Starting at the top illustration and working their way around the card in a spiral, children write the answer to each calculation in the box, creating a running total as they go. The final answer is printed at the end of the trail, beside the illustration in the middle of the card, so they can see if they have correctly completed it. If not, children can check their work to see where they have gone wrong.
Answer cards can be used by the pupils themselves or by the teacher to see at a glance where pupils have gone wrong. Print and laminate if required.
