In this 16 slide powerpoint, I have selected 4 key quotations for each poem to annotate in detail with a focus on all 3 areas of assessment: A01: meanings A02: analysis of methods A03: Context/Themes This lesson is repeatable in the run up to the exam to revise all 60 quotations and their various layers of meaning. I have also included an answer sheet on A3 paper with all the slides on one page. How it works: Show students the 4 quotations and give them time to annotate them then reveal the teacher answers to compare. The teacher annotations are animated and appear one by one on the mouse click so you can talk through them. A successful lesson that doesn’t require any photocopying!

Inspired by the image of the old man in the 2018 AQA English Language exam, I have collated and categorised 275 words to describe a face onto a worksheet to help students with their descriptive writing. Students found this useful in helping them to improve the precision of their characters descriptions for English Language Paper 1.

Differentiated - 3 different versions of essay plans for Macbeth to use with different ability groups. For ease of photocopying, I have created 6 exam questions on one A3 students. Each question has a planning grid for students to map out their ideas. Useful for final revision session. Also contains 4 completed plans for students to convert into essays. Great for revision lessons or for homework tasks.

A range of high grade Macbeth exam responses. All responses were written to reflect the ability of grade 8/9 students working under timed conditions. Marking is subjective but as an experienced examiner, I am confident all of these responses would, in my opinion, fit into the top band because all 6 contain thorough (and at times perceptive) debate with the nuances of the question supported by thorough and at times perceptive analysis of methods and wider ideas supported by fine-grained analysis of judicious quotations.

Lesson and resources to help students produce a high quality response on the character of Eva Smith. Eva Smith essay planning sheet with answers for AQA 1-9 An Inspector Calls style question. The planning sheet contains perceptive points with carefully selected quotations and space for students to make deeper insights into language and theme. This is aimed at students with a target grade of 7-9. There is also a PowerPoint version aimed at students with a target grade of 4-5.

Learning outcomes: To identify features of Dickens’ style To apply knowledge in a piece of descriptive writing To evaluate against the success criteria Next students examine the methods Dickens uses to describe the fog in an extract from ‘Bleak House’ and the snow in an extract from ‘A Christmas Carol’. There is differentiation so students of different ability can examine different methods used by the author. Students must then try to write a paragraph in the same style about rain. There is a differentiated success criteria. The plenary can be done in the form of peer and self assessment and has sentence stems linked to the success criteria.

A lesson for exploring Storm on the Island in the Power and Conflict AQA anthology. Step 1: Students use the hint questions to prompt them to gain an independent understanding of the poem. Step 2: Read through the answer and complete. Step 3: Questions to test understanding of new annotations. Step 4: Review by creating thesis statement about Heaney’s purpose.

Detailed lessons analysing the significance of the 4 ghosts in the novel. A differentiated worksheet to invite students to explore the impact of each ghost in A Christmas Carol independently. A key extract is selected for each ghost and students answer the tough, tougher or toughest challenges. Also includes a full lesson analysing the Ghost of Christmas Past extract in greater detail. Also includes a grade 9 style response on the importance of ghosts to Scrooge’s change and transformation.

Resources based on music for ensemble (classical chamber music). Students must define terminology associated with chamber music and then categorise this onto a summary sheet (answers on the pp). There is also an emphasis on the difference between baroque/classical/romantic music and what students could spot in a score reading question. There are also a listening question with answers with you tube links on the pp. Differentiated tasks are including for all stages of the lesson.

A prompt sheet to help students to peer assess poetry comparisons against the marking criteria. I have used this with the AQA Power and Conflict poems; however, it can easily be adapted for other specifications.
