Speaking is a language skill that learners tend to find very challenging, regardless of level, and increased engagement with language that requires them to both reproduce accurately language they are already familiar with, and to be creative with that language in order to produce new language is integral to successful language learning.
The 10 questions focus largely on the present tense, with some examples of tenses such as preterite and conditional. I like to include tenses we may not have formally covered, as the activity is not solely about practising language, but also about actively learning it. I encourage students to look for cues and clues in the questions themselves, and this certainly enables them to engage with new or unknown language successfully, and to progress in their learning.
Each card has an image: some of these are specific visual prompts to help students infer meaning; some are more generic images. I do use images as much as possible with this kind of activity, not only to provide the prompt, but also to add to the visual appeal of it, which is a real motivator for learning.
I remind students that it is not necessary to tell the truth - the purpose is to create and produce accurate and realistic language. Students can prepare their responses in as much detail as possible on the accompanying planning sheet, remembering that these are conversation starters, so that once they have responded, they should then say something to keep the conversation going.

French Numbers 0-31 Challenge Cards really do help to create a lively language learning environment. Students can develop, embed, reinforce and refresh their knowledge of French numbers in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. They have a bonus multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading and spelling. They’re great for helping beginner French students familiarize themselves with, and develop competence in, speaking, reading, writing and spelling longer words in French. The cards are useful not only when you’re focusing on French Numbers 0-31, but also for sub lessons, as an all-year-round starter, plenary and general ‘pick-me-up’ activity, as the goal is not simply to learn how to count in French, but also to enjoy working with French, and to feel confident about doing so.
All questions are in French, and range in complexity and challenge, both in terms of language and number skills. I’ve used visual prompts such as maths symbols to ensure all learners can engage with the questions, and this helps them to begin to infer meaning from context, and to decode cues and prompts to foster understanding. I don’t allow the use of calculators to increase the challenge a little. Some questions focus specifically on French maths language, which students do not always engage with very often. The level of maths is fairly simple, but certainly draws on prior number and arithmetic learning.
I’ve labelled the cards A-L, so that if you have the set of 48 task cards, you can use them together.

This is a free set of 15 French speaking prompts, with suggested responses. My students have always found these a really useful learning activity. With the structured speaking prompts, they are able to develop confidence in their speaking, working independently in pairs or small groups. At the same time, they are building their vocabulary and enhancing their understanding and knowledge of French grammar too.
There are 15 questions with 15 suggested responses. As students become more confident and competent, they begin to rely less on the prompt cards, and answer questions in their own way - and even ask them differently too, if their talk partner is using the answer card as the main prompt.
The questions in this freebie are aimed at advanced beginner to intermediate French students, though my more advanced students enjoy ‘going back to the start’ too, particularly near exam time. There’s a reference sheet, with all the questions and answers written out in full - I always provide a reference resource, and my students like to keep them in their learning folders for longer-term reference. When they create their own questions and answers for each other on the question and answer card template, they also find them really useful as a form of writing frame.

25 high-frequency French RE verbs, listed alphabetically French-English and English-French ideal as a year-round reference resource, and students find it particularly useful for exam revision, whether working in class time or at home. It’s useful for advanced beginner French students to provide a language learning map and for intermediate French students who are working with more complex language and texts, including authentic resources, and as a French vocabulary audit and enrichment.
The verbs are all in the infinitive form and feature high-frequency French RE verbs that I work with in the advanced beginner to intermediate stages of my French learning programmes. It’s important in language learning to ensure that students quickly develop a useful French verbs vocabulary bank, are able to recognise high-frequency French verbs, and are confident with the meaning of those verbs in their first or home language. At that point students can move swiftly on to looking at French conjugation and using the verbs in a communicative and practical context, enabling them to produce more detailed and descriptive language. This is an integral element to successful language learning.
Students shouldn’t take on the task of learning long lists of verbs or other vocabulary all at once though: frequent and regular use in real-world practical contexts is far more successful at embedding vocabulary into longer-term memory. I also use the books for quick vocabulary quizzes, again at frequent and regular intervals - I simply shout out the French or English verb, the first student or team to shout out the correct answer wins a point. I’ve found this to be a really successful alternative to more formal vocabulary testing.
The list is a great time-saver for teachers too - if you’re preparing resources focusing on high-frequency French RE verbs for your students, the list is a good starting point.

BEGINNER SPANISH INTERMEDIATE SPANISH-SPEAKING COUNTRIES & PORTUGUESE-SPEAKING POSTERS FLASHCARDS 62 posters / flashcards featuring 21 Spanish-speaking countries and 10 Portuguese-speaking countries with the countries, capital cities and flags, in Spanish.
I've found having the posters in my classroom provides an instant introduction to the scope of the Spanish-speaking world, and seeing the countries where Portuguese, rather than Spanish, is spoken, prevents them confusing the two from the very beginning of their learning - my students do often tend to get them a little mixed up!
The posters are great for reading, speaking and pronunciation prompts too. I often ask quick questions such as ¿Cuál es la capital de...?, ¿Sí o no? Madrid es la capital de Paraguay? or ¿Se habla español o portugués en Brasil? - there are lots of questioning and speaking opportunities, using the posters as visual prompts. Speaking does tend to be quite a challenging skill, particularly for beginner language learners, so getting the most from classroom decor to encourage students to speak is really important. This works particularly with my beginner Spanish classes, as it's a great way of encouraging them to speak, and to construct sentences, from the very beginning of their Spanish program. I've often found that there can be several (or more!) countries that students don't actually know, or have never heard of, and the posters are really useful for helping them develop their general understanding and knowledge of the wider world.
There are two backgrounds to choose from: Spanish / Portuguese flag or plain. Laminate them if you can, as they hang really well, are easier to manipulate as flashcards, and definitely last in great condition for years.

Sopas de letras are a fabulous way of encouraging students to engage with the written word in Spanish, refreshing and reinforcing language as they complete the grids. This freebie set features two differentiated word searches, with each consecutive grid increasing in challenge. They focus on a range of countries where Spanish is an official language, with reference to a number of countries where a significant number of the population speak Spanish as their first or second language. The word searches really do help students develop their knowledge and awareness of the Spanish-speaking world, and just how widely Spanish is spoken around the globe.
The word searches work well across the school year, not only when you’re focusing on Spanish-speaking countries. I use them as starters, refreshers, plenaries, fun-time fillers and for cover lessons quite regularly, as this helps embed students’ learning, and they genuinely enjoy putting their memory to the test!

Perfect for developing Spanish language skills in general, as well as for practising and revising numbers 0-21 in Spanish. There are 12 differentiated questions, with answer key and recording sheet. The cards are numbered A-L, so you can easily use these with the set of 48 task cards, making a total of 60 cards.
Challenge cards are an ideal language learning activity, perfect for multi-skill language learning: listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading and spelling. They really help students develop more independence in their learning, moving away from more teacher-led tasks and activities.
All the questions are in Spanish, including a range of Spanish maths language. Students may not necessarily engage with that at this stage of their learning, so I use maths symbols as visual clues and prompts, enabling students to infer meaning from context. This is a key language learning skill in general, which is important for students to develop as quickly as possible. Depending on the particular group, I may read through the questions together as a whole-group first. I really try to make the most of the task cards too - for example, with multiple-choice questions, I ask students how they have arrived at the correct response, and what is wrong with the other responses. Being able to identify errors is a key language learning skill, and it’s useful for students to begin to develop that from the very beginning of their learning.

Ideal for young and beginner Spanish learners. I like to give my language learners comprehensive core vocabulary books and reference resources. They enable them to work more independently, both in class and at home. This Spanish Telling the Time Reference Book has 14 pages, and features every analogue clock time in Spanish. There’s a My Notes page too - I encourage students to make notes on their progress, and think about how they are progressing. We also use this to inform and guide whole-group discussion about learning and progress in general, which is a really popular and effective activity too.
I like to give visual vocabulary guides to my young beginner language learners, as they can generally more easily assimilate new language and vocabulary when they are able to link it in their memory with a visual image. It’s particularly important to match a clock time with the corresponding clock face when learning how to tell time. Students file the guides in their Spanish vocabulary folders with other vocabulary guides, which gives them an accessible and useful Spanish vocabulary reference bank for both class and home learning.
For young and / or beginner Spanish learners, I focus initially on a single time set, because in my experience students benefit from a very clear outline of new language and vocabulary, avoiding lots of text on a single page - even my older students who are completely new to Spanish prefer this. When I’m sure that students are confident with o’clock, I then move on to additional time sets.

The latter will enable them to prepare detailed responses to questions which address general knowledge, rather than their own life. They can then transfer this knowledge to their spoken work.

This really helps them focus closely on the language, and helps learners who are slightly less confident working with a larger group.
Writing: The cards work best in pair or small-group work, where learners have access to reference resources, such as bilingual dictionaries and the internet. The latter will enable them to prepare detailed responses to questions which address general knowledge, rather than their own life. They can then transfer this knowledge to their spoken work.
The prompts broadly address the following themes: college life & study; future plans; information technology; where I live; social & environmental issues; North America/UK & travel; social activity & daily life.
There’s a 2-page prompts master list, which is useful as a general reference resource, and we also use it for reading aloud and pronunciation practice, discussing in what ways we might adapt and amend the questions to create new prompts.

French verbs dominoes games: 3 games and challenges are a lively alternative to more traditional grammar & vocabulary ‘drilling’ activities. They will help students build up and embed their vocabulary and knowledge of common French verbs in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher.
There are 99 high-frequency French verbs in the infinitive form, along with the corresponding English verbs. Students can work happily challenging themselves and each other to create a perfect domino bilingual verb sequence, on the classroom floor, or on a long(ish) table, by matching the French and English verbs. The game has a bonus multi-focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, and reading, and also helps students identify cognates and words that may look similar to English, but mean something different.
There are three games, each with a different level of challenge:
Challenge One features the verbs in alphabetical order, French to English
Challenge Two features the verbs in random order, also French to English
Challenge Three again features the verbs in random order, but this time from English to French, which works a little different in terms of vocab recall
There’s a full alphabetical French-English verb list, which students find really useful as they begin to build and embed their verb vocabulary - we find it useful to have a quick look through the list prior to playing for the first time, and it’s also really good for some additional whole-group pronunciation practice. Each challenge is on a different background, so that they can be easily identified.
To ensure successful learning, play regularly as you work with verbs and vocabulary - against a timer in teams works well to map both improved recall and word recognition, as well as increasing confidence - students genuinely enjoy seeing if they can beat their own time record.
There’s definitely prep involved - printing and cutting out. I always laminate my dominoes games, as they’re far more learner-friendly, and they last for absolutely years, so once you’re prepped the set or several sets, you will never have to prep the games again.

I think that lessons in the run-up to Christmas provide the perfect opportunity to revisit language we’re learnt earlier in the school year - my beginner French students really enjoy going back over and consolidating the vocab that they were introduced to right at the beginning of their learning. I created various sets of Christmas-themed vocab cards to get them feeling festive - it definitely works! I tend to have several sets all ready, and keep them in learning folders, so that students can choose which vocab groups they want to work on, though often, they like to work with the complete set, so it’s a good idea to have a couple of sets so that there are enough to go round.
The Santas have vocabulary in the following word groups:

Les jours de la semaine

Les nombres 0 à 31
Les couleurs
Quelques pays du monde
The Snowmen have vocabulary in the following word groups:

There are a lot of cards, which means some prep - if you can, laminate them, not only because they’re far better to learn with, but also because you’ll be able to use them over and over again for years! A whole-group lively & communicative language learning game, ideal for practising, reinforcing and consolidating 99 high-frequency Italian verbs. The game has a multi-skill focus: listening, speaking and reading, with an important bonus focus on social interaction and participation. It’s perfect for pronunciation practice too. Active learning is a really successful way of developing both language skills and general confidence.
The verbs are in the infinitive form, and the aim of the game is to create an Italian verb chain as quickly as possible. There are two games, each with a slightly different challenge:
Challenge 1: verbs are in alphabetical order, with the question and answer format: Io ho… Chi ha… ?
Challenge 2: verbs are in random order, with the question and answer format: Hai… Sì, ho…
In both challenges, the English translation of the verb appears immediately below the Italian verbs, which maximizes opportunity for really embedding vocab. The game works just as well if the cards are placed on a longish table, or other flat surface. I created the game for my KS3 Italian learners, who are ready to move into KS4 Italian, but I’ve also played the game with my more advanced learners, who really enjoy ’going back to the start’ and having the opportunity to get up, walk about and talk - the games definitely provide some essential variety in learning activities.
I’d definitely recommend you laminate the cards, despite the extra prep and expense. They’re far more learner-friendly, and they will last for absolutely years. Distribute the cards, one or two per student, depending on how many students you have in your group. I frequently use a timer when we play. Playing in teams, using either a single challenge, or with both challenges, is really popular - students find the competitive element really motivating and are genuinely keen to see which team can finish first, and whether they can beat their own time record. I always do some high-speed verb quiz oral warm-up and warm-down activities to really get the most out of the game, for example ***Come si dice APRIRE in inglese? or Vero o falso - TO OPEN è APRIRE in italiano?***.

I have, Who has... ? is a great language learning game. The repetitive nature of the questions and answers, supported by the visual prompt of the animals images, makes it perfect for practicing, reinforcing and refreshing a range of animals in Latin. It’s a whole-group communicative game, with a multi-skill focus on speaking, listening, reading, vocabulary-building and developing language confidence. The game really does help to create a lively language learning environment, and is a great alternative to more traditional 'drilling' activities.
It doesn't matter if some of the words don't feature in your immediate or longer-term learning plan: the aim of the game is to encourage children to engage happily and confidently with both the written and spoken word in Latin. The game works well during your work with the animal kingdom in Latin, and as an all-year-round s tarter and refresher game - along the way, children may even get to know some new animals!
There are two games, and two challenges:
Challenge One: with the words written out in full in alphabetical order
Challenge Two: with the words in topsy-turvy order, and with only the first letter given, which is great for a memory work-out, and really encourages children to focus on the individual words, as well as the gender of each word. There is a visual prompt to help children remember the correct word. The gender is also given, as an additional opportunity to reinforce the concept of gender.
There are 30 animals in the set, including both masculine and feminine (this set of animals doesn't actually feature any with neuter gender), which is a really useful engagement with the concept of gender:
