Lesson 2 allows children to investigate which materials float and which materials sink. The final lesson encourages children to investigate waterproof and absorbent materials.
This resource pack includes:
Material's introduction PowerPoint introduction with a fun pirate twist
Material match activity - a selection of pictures for children to match with the material they are made from or to write the material they are made from next to the material for your more able children. (These work great as a cut and stick activity or why not reduce the mess in your class and print them onto stickers instead!)
Marking stickers - these can also be printed on paper, cut and stuck into children's books
A set of six beautiful play dough mats with a fun pirate theme. Encourage your children to make a play dough pirate ship out of wooden planks, cutlery out of metal and sails out of fabric.
A brilliant PowerPoint to introduce children to floating and sinking and to set them the challenge of a science investigation.
A brilliant PowerPoint to introduce children to waterproof and absorbent materials. It sets a pirate experiment challenge with instructions on how to carry out the experiment.
A planning overview to outline the main activity and listing some independent activity ideas too.
A fantastic fun and pirate themed resource to support children in using the suffix -er and -est in their writing. Stick the pirate activity picture into children's book. They can then write sentences in their book using the suffixes e.g. Sea Dog is braver than Captain Black Beard. Jack Sparrow is the bravest pirate. etc. Also included is a red pen question to support deepening learning.
A fantastic resource outlining the history of castles and how they changed over the years. Included in this resource pack:
A wonderful presentation introduction and an accompanying worksheet.
This is a brilliant Design and Technology project and a really fun way to explore winding mechanisms.
The Notebook gives an overview of the project starting with children exploring toys with a winding mechanism, exploring what real life objects use this mechanism. Children will then be introduced to their main project. They can design their castle using the worksheet provided and then have a go making their castle with a working drawbridge (It may be an idea to let children have a go at making it first, evaluating what went well and what needed changing before making their final castle). Finally children can use the evaluation sheet provided to complete their project.
A fantastic and engaging assembly! It gets children involved and is lots of fun (tried and tested). This assembly will support children in considering the choices they make and to get them to think about making good choices. This assembly pack includes a script and PowerPoint.

This is a great resource to support children in reading new words by sounding out letters and blending them together. Children can then decide which subheading the statements belong to in order to check their understanding of what they have read.
This activity is differentiated into phonics phases 2, 3, 4 and 5.
This is a fun and engaging activity to really get children thinking about conjunctions and using them accurately to extend a sentence. Presented in Power Point format, children will be presented with a sentence that they then most complete by working together using the conjunction that has been giving. This can be completed in small groups or even as a whole class. Maybe the children could go on to set their own conjunction tennis challenge for a friend?
This is a really fun way to teach doubling to your class. Simple print and laminate the large doubling machine (You may wish to enlarge this A3) and show children what happens as numbers move through the function machine. After completing this practically using whiteboards and concrete resources for counting id required, children can then move on to recording this in their books. The small doubling machines can be printed on to stickers or glued in.
An amazing bundle of everything you need for a really successful and engaging castles topic. Aimed at KS1 but with adaptations could also be used for Lower KS2.
This is a fantastic resource that enables children to explore the relationship between addition and subtraction. These could be printed smaller to be glued into books or why not laminate them and ask children to complete them with a board marker so then can be used again and again.
A brilliant tried and tested resource. Perfect for any castle topic. Included in this resource pack:
A wonderful notebook presentation, introducing the two different types of castles.
An informative PowerPoint to explore the key features of a castle
