This unit introduces pupils to the vocabulary associated with New Year Resolutions and the use of ‘IR’ to form the future tense. This is one of four units consisting of a variety of interactive reading, listening and writing activities, where the main focus is on the development of skills and language learning strategies. A Maths support programme based on yearly tests which focus on key objectives. There is a test for pupils in each of the years 2 to 6 and each test has been designed around the key objectives in the previous year’s programme of study. The intention is that the pupils’ performance on the test would serve as a diagnostic tool for identifying areas of the previous year’s work which require further development for certain pupils.

This resource will teach pupils how to read and say the different pronunciations of the letter string 'ough'. Most of the time we teach pupils to pronounce words using rules and then tell them about exceptions. In this case most of the pronunciations of 'ough' are exceptions or isolates. There are five whole class activities for the whiteboard. National curriculum links: 1.3, 2.3, 3.2 Teachers can assess pupils by listening to them read a section of the story in activity 1.

The units deal with the nature and definition of crime and deviance and lead to an open debate as to the nature of social control in our society. The third unit explores labelling theories of criminal behaviour and the final unit encourages learners to think about the value and accuracy of official statistics on crime by exploring the reasons people have for reporting and not reporting crime to the police.
