PEER or PEEL paragraph chart using Glenn Colquhoun’s The Other Side of the River. Each column represents an aspect of the paragraph. Page 1 is a model answer for the students. Two columns on page 2 and 3 are complete leaving the final columns for students to complete. A scaffolded activity showing students how to develop their analysis when writing paragraphs. Aimed at Year 9 or KS 3 level.

6 colourful flashcards (or classroom posters if enlarged) of basic plural rules.

10 card sets (6 cards in each). The sets are colour coded so the students know which numbers they have to sequence. Some numbers are written numerically and some are written using words. Students are to place the numbers in sequential order demonstrating they can read both the numbers and words. This is a neat little activity to boost literacy skills.

12 revision cards on Virgil’s Aeneid, Book 5. Questions ask for short, one word answers and extended responses. Ideal revision resource once students are familiar with the story.

Visual display featuring Benny, his bowl, dog biscuits and his friend Henry the cat. Ideally, cut out and laminate. 4 story cards are included. Instructions are on each card. They contain basic facts about Benny and need to be read aloud to the student(s) as this activity is designed to focus on phonological sounds, not the written word. Excellent kinesthetic activity for students as they need to listen carefully for the number of sounds emphasised by the teacher and place the biscuits in Benny’s bowl accordingly.

10 pairs / 20 flashcards of objects or abstract concepts. Card will need to be pre-cut. Students have to match up the pairs based on which one has the silent e added to make a new word. This is a neat little flashcard set when students need to develop phonemic awareness. 11 sheets / pairs of cards. Place all the cards picture side up, students are to create two piles, one with the ‘dge’ sounds and the other with the ‘g’ sound. Words are designed to be copied / laminated on the back of the card so students can see what the word looks like in written form. This is meant to be primarily a visual / sound game.

If your students are confident with sight words and CVC words and you would like to introduce a comprehension element, this is the ideal resource. 15 sheets / 30 cards each containing a basic question. Students are able to place a yes / no card next to the question card. This activity often leads on to group or class discussions about the topic on the card. 1 yes / no card sheet that can be printed as many times as needed.

DIY phonic fans. The first 4 pages contains the initial 23 sounds students learn. The following 26 sounds are the more complex 26 consonant digraphs and graphemes. A split pin is used to make the fans (6-8 in a group) at the bottom of the ice cream cone. The fans can be used to ask students to identify sounds as they hear them from an audio recording or being read to in class. This activity is a brilliant way to help students develop phonological awareness.
