**This lesson looks at the different experiences of the migrant groups in England during the Medieval period. For example, students study how successfully each migrant group settled into England as well as explain this success/failure. **
Groups which will be focussed on in this lesson are: The Vikings, the Normans, The Jews, the Lombardy families and the migrants from the Low Countries.

** In this lesson, students will use knowledge of the events of the battle to help explain the reasons for William’s victory at the Battle of Hastings. **
They will then be helped to complete a 16 mark exam question.

Lesson Summary: This lesson covers the various groups in Anglo-Saxon society who helped control and govern the country such as the witan, earls, shire reeves and fryd. It also looks at methods of law and order used in Anglo-Saxon society such as collective responsibility, tithings and the wirgild.

Slide 2: Learning Outcomes/Achievements: A rough guide to the grading system based on GCSE criteria for this lesson.

This lesson does not have to be taught as lesson 4 but at any point in the study of Whitechapel. All resources included to save using the book.
RECAP: Students asked to share ideas about their prior learning about workhouses and then can be supported by the use of a short video clip.
STARTER: 6 source sheets with extracts from a cartoon source have been divided up so groups of students can focus on different issues of the workhouse, before feeding back to the class. This should get the students warmed up before looking specifically at more exam based sources.
TASK 1: Students given 5 sources which can either be printed out separately or given to them on one handout. They then fill in a sheet which directs them to think about the usefulness of each source and the process they can use to do this effectively.
PLENARY/ASSESSMENT: An 8 mark exam question about the usefulness of two sources. This is an ideal homework sheet.
