I use this scheme of work with my Year 9 classes, as not only does it offer exciting and creative opportunities, but it also allows for complex exploration how to direct. The students assessment allows them to experience both directing a piece of drama and to be directed in a piece of drama.
Objective Overview of Director SOW
§ To explore a variety of ways to direct others, and to develop and hone the skills of a competent director.
§ Students should recognise the communicative powers of theatre, and ensure all work aims to evoke a response or provide a message to the intended audience.
§ Students to play around with script extracts, and block sections of text.
§ Students should collaborate effectively with other group members.
Included:
In-depth Scheme of Work
Lesson Resources (Worksheets, Scripts, Activity Sheets, Evaluations)
Assessment Instructions
Please note:
You may want to purchase ‘The Believers’ by Bryony Lavery, ‘Spring Awakening’ by Georg Buchner and ‘Tristan & Yseult’ by Kneehigh, or ‘Crouch, Touch, Pause, Engage’ however any extract duologues can work for the main assessment.

A note from the author:
Some of the resources from Arts Award directly are not very easy to use nor are they easy to communicate to or made accessible for young people. Therefore, I have created this adaptable resource to help you plan when you will deliver your Arts Award throughout the academic year. I have been assessing the Arts Award for over 4 years now - Bronze, Silver & Gold.
Overview of Resource:
In my school Year 10 take Bronze, Year 11 take SIlver and Years 12/13 take Gold.
Year 10 complete Bronze in the Autumn and Spring terms, then start Silver in the Summer term and finish it in Year 11 in the Autumn and Spring terms prior to GCSE exams. Year 12/13 have a choice to complete it over three terms or over 5 terms.
This mapping template is fully adaptable to your circumstances, term dates and pressures, so feel free to adapt however you see fit to!
Included:
Academic Year Mapping for Arts Award (Bronze, Silver & Gold)
Please note:
You must ensure that a member of your team is trained to assess your Arts Award candidates. Alternatively you can contact a local centre who can assess your candidates. Visit the Arts Award website for further details.

10 pages of 8 cards each, 80 cards in total. For hot seating rehearsal techniques in classes, and as part of production or exam rehearsals.
There are two options of how to use these cards:
Personally I like to laminate these cards on card (double-sided with the backs) and keep them in bundles 1x Pile of Beginner, 1x Pile of Intermediate, 1x Pile of Advanced. I ensure that I also use the back of the card templates to ensure that the cards work as a whole.
You could print out a complete sheet and give one to each pupil. This way they have almost a scorecard to use when working on this technique, depending on the level that the actor wishes to try at.
Overview of Resource:
30 x Beginner Cards (For use as a good warm up to hot-seating for all level actors, and for KS3 and lower level KS4 / GCSE)
30 x Intermediate Cards (For KS4 / GCSE above, and high level KS3)
20 x Advanced Cards (for KS5 / A Level, and high level KS4 / GCSE)
Category:
Rehearsal Techniques (Bundle)
Stanislavski (Bundle)
Included:
80 x Hot-Seating Cue Cards
Please note:
Purchasing this document allows you to amend and reproduce the cards in anyway that you wish.

A note from the author:
I have used these resources with my form group from Year 7 - 9 to ensure that not only do I develop a strong pastoral grounding with the students, but also that I build a professional relationship with my form. Some of the resources will need to be tailored / adapted to the needs of your form and your school pastoral policies, however they are a great template to work from.
Included here are a range of different resources. The main ideas are embedded within the two ‘Twilight’ documents as this is from a session I ran on our Pastoral role as form teachers.
Posters / Displays:
- Multiple Intelligence Posters - to instil a sense of acceptance of difference
- A Fingerprint Tree (will need an ink pad) where all students add their fingerprint as a leaf to the tree - to create a bond of loyalty
- Quotes of the Week - to inspire students
- Code of Conduct examples - to help students understand expectations of the school, staff and themselves.
- Roles/Responsibilities Lists with ideas to get the whole form involved.
Activities Ideas:
- A range of ideas in the ‘Twilight’ documents
- Teach a Skill / Run an Activity Forms - student led in form time
- Quiz on school rules and expectations (obviously will need to be adapted)
- Settling in Meetings / Interview Question Sheets
- Caption Competitions
- Desert Island Disks Certificates (students talk about and present extracts of two songs that are important for them)
- Puns and Riddles to keep their mind fresh.
