This unit of work encourages students to appreciate the links between music and Geography, why it is popular, the many genres it entails and how it is used around the world. Traditions from Brazil, China, England, India, and Russia are investigated for their similarities in instruments, dances, and festivals. Music as an economic activity is explored, in addition to festivals in the United Kingdom and why they may be located where they are. Local venues to the students, both indoors and outdoors, are investigated for their sustainability for hosting a music festival. The unit concludes with the students designing a brand and logo for a sustainable music festival at their school. The final designs are then peer assessed. The Kayapo are the indigenous people of Brazil. They live in the plains of the Mato Grosso and Para south of the Amazon Basin and along the Rio Xingu and its tributaries. They call themselves ‘Mebengokre’, which translates to ‘people of the wellspring’. These worksheets have the students explore the Kayapo’s beliefs, examine the differences and simalarities between us and them, as well as giving them an opportunity to research the tribe by answering their peers questions about them

Around 2,200 Matsés live on the Peru-Brazil frontier in the Amazon rainforest. The international boarder that splits their home is the Yaquerana River and it runs through the heart of their land. To the Matsés the streams, floodplains and white-sand forests make up an ancestral territory that is shared by the entire tribe. These worksheets have the students look closely at the acate green tree frog which, as well as being a culinary delicacy, are used to increase hunting ability. Additionally the students investigate an oil company who are exploring the Matses’s land to drill.

The Maasai Tribe live and farm in the savanna. Unfortunately, in the past fifty years the Maasai way of life has had to change due to pressures from commercial and government policies. As a result, the ecosystem has also started to suffer. The students’ task is to produce a project booklet about the Maasi Tribe including their location, statistics, gender roles, homes, dress, and culture. This booklet is designed to help students distinguish fact and opinion and offer both positive and negative arguments to real and artificial Christmas trees. They discover the history behind the origins of the Christmas tree and discuss why they think it’s so popular. The social, economic, and environmental implications of each type of tree are discussed and analysed to aid the students in deciding which they think is more appropriate. Their task is to use what they have learnt to design a leaflet highlighting their opinion to help the public decide; this is then peer assessed. These worksheets introduce students to the background and traditions of the Hindu ‘Festival Of Lights’, Diwali. The story of Rama and Sita explains why Diwali is celebrated and why Divas – small clay lamps – are an important part of this celebration. The students discover cultural and religious festivals where light plays an important role and discuss why these similarities have arisen.
