Playground Battleships is a great way to learn about, or recap finding coordinates on a one quadrant grid. In pairs your class will play a large scale version of Battleships by drawing a grid using chalk and then using natural objects or chalk to keep track of when and where their ships have been hit. Using physical materials outdoors is a great way to introduce your students to subtraction. For this activity they take a task card and use leaves, stones, and sticks to help them work out the simple subtraction on the card. Science Murder Mysteries are great fun for both you and the students. For this mystery students will use their knowledge of materials and their properties as well as their states of matter knowledge to investigate who poisoned Andrew Smith.
