A 13 page PPT Lesson. This lesson aims to prepare learners for their L1/L2 writing exam. As a class, they will discuss a sample question and the tutor will show them a basic answer. The tutor will then show learners how to bulk out their writing: in order the meet the exam’s word count criteria. There is then a practice question ( an article) and tips on how to answer this question. This PPT should cover an hour session.

A fun English game designed for my KS3 class to help them with their creative writing. The board contains a series of 5 prompts which will allow the learner to build their short gothic story: setting, main character, spooky object, main theme and conflict. Give the student a dice piece. They will roll the dice piece 5 times moving from left to right of the board. For example: The first number refers to the setting, the second number rolled refers to the story’s main character…etc… The learner will then write a short story based on what they rolled on the prompt board.

A revision sheet on how to format different types of text that the learner might have to write in their English Functional Skills exam. These can also be cut and laminated and used as revision cards.

An English Reading Comprehension Skimming & Scanning Activity. This would be ideal for E3 Functional Skills learners and pupils in the KS3 & KS4 age groups. Based on the topic of LGBTQ+, learners will read a source document before answering 8 skimming and scanning questions based on the source document. Answers are provided so learners can self mark.

This is a task booklet which would be useful for when learners begin to study/ revise the poem. Cut out and hide the clues that are located on the second sheet. Your class need to locate each clue which will contain an individual letter. They will write these letters on their game sheets. Once they have located the clues, they have to unscramble the letters which will reveal two separate words. These words spell a the name of a character from this popular movie! You could also split your class into two teams! Place the teams in two separate rooms and get them to locate the clues. The first team to find all of the clues and who unscramble the letters, wins!

A worksheet aimed at a range of learners. Get your learners to identify if the words on the page are either a noun, verb, adjective or adverb. There is a key on the top of the page so they can colour in and colour code their answers. Answer sheet is provided.

Skimming & Scanning Lesson. Includes a 13 page PPT on the differences between skimming and scanning techniques. Throughout the PPT, learners are given tips on how to effectively skim and scan a piece of text. Examples and questions are featured on the PPT throughout. Also included: 1 task booklet with a source document. There are nine questions, based on the text, which the students are to answer. Answers are included so that learners can self mark. 1 task booklet with a source document included. Learners are to use the source document to make their own skimming & scanning question sheet. Students will then get a peer to answer the questions that they have created. This would suit High Level E3 and L1 learners.
