WHY YOU MIGHT LIKE BINGO A GAME OF SIMPICITY AND COMPLEXITY

ABOUT BINGO I understand that BINGO is an American invented game, so let me explain my BINGO programs and why you might like them. I improve my programs with ascending number names: BINGO 67, BINGO 68… I often think I’m done, so I publish them; I’m up to BUS BINGO 91! BINGO is a little lotto type game, that can be quickly run. Children and old people play, as it takes only attending to your card, However; it’s a mania in parts of the USA and other places. It is an entre to numbers and probability and grits to a computer, which is at heart a number cruncher. What you do is get a card with 24 random numbers from 1 to 75. A caller picks number from 1-75 and you cover the numbers on your card. In my game, you win when you cover all your numbers. A perfect game; in which you cover all your card in 24 turns has an astronomically low chance of happening. With forty cards in a game, it lasts for about 71 turns. People bet on this! It’s so simple that children play, with underlying probability that can interest mathematicians. (I have played 530 million simulated games to show each card has a equal chance of winning an any 4 numbers in a row game. BINGO and computers are simpatico.) There are an astronomical number of different cards. BUS BINGO 91 is a quick way to play to view some of this simplicity/complexity, without the complications. It just runs games and shows you the results. In this way, you can disabuse yourself about notions of luck and special numbers; which some people charmingly harbor. While I wrote this program for my own use, to play on a bus with ten cards; you can get in on the action. If you win in under 70 turns, count it as a win; that is, you would probably win on the bus with 30 other cards playing. The fascination with BINGO puzzle me. My first response to it, after childhood, encounters; was zombie-like boredom, but it grows on you; so give it a look!

There is a way to see demo games quickly to learn how to play. This game reveals many aspects of probability and provokes discussion and experimentation with numbers.

ABOUT BUS BINGO BUS BINGO is a program that covers ten bingo cards. It is a cover-all-the-numbers bingo game. When one of the ten cards is completely covered with 24 hits, you win. I wrote this to play on a bus to Atlantic City, a resort on the New Jersey shore. It’s 2 1/2 hours from New York, where I live; so a few bingo games are played to pass the time on the bus. You can buy as many cards as you want; one person plays with five cards. I thought it would be novel fun to play with ten cards. I asked for ten cards, I could keep. I put these card’s numbers into the computer. When a number is called, I enter the number and the cards are marked. Since I pay a dollar each card, it’s fair to play like this; it only makes more “action”. When I win, I take the card that won and give it in for checking. I’ve won a few times already. I have improved the program to look better with even spacing. This edition has an automatic number picker. These numbers can be entered by just pressing enter; so you can play test games to see how the program works. You can also enter your own cards so you can play where you are. I hope you like BUS BINGO and will make comments about it. Paul Skittone THIS VERSION HAS A BAR THAT SHOWS THE NUMBER OF HITS A NUMBER HAS. IT LIGHTS UP.
