In response to requests from delegates, here are copies of my Powerpoints from the Keynote speech and my workshops at the ALL West of England Conference : ALL Talk, March 2014. (They may not make complete sense if you weren't there.) I&'ve also put a link to my write-up of the TL workshop.

'ich wohnte in Liverpool' is a KS4 level text about Markus Babbel's time with Liverpool FC and his opinions of the city. Text is followed by (i) richtig / falsch questions and (ii) open questions in German. 'Interview mit Markus Babbel' requires pupils to anser questions as though they were Markus Babbel. They can answer some on the basis of the previous text but will need to use a bit of imagination to answer them all.

Powerpoint in which an overview of how to say 'the', 'my', 'your' and 'he / she / it / them' after 'mit' is built up one slide at a time. Students can be invited to deduce the patterns from the clues present on slide 1. Once the table has been built up, each subsequent slide has a single item missing, so you can play Kim's Game.

This is a facilitated activity I did with my Year 11s (i) to help them share ideas on how to revise and (ii) to help the recalcitrant see that the others were busy revising. After the creation of the Post-It wall I typed up all their ideas and distributed them to the whole class.

Presentation for departmental CPD. Summary of key points from OfSTED findings relating to MFL lessons observed between 2007 and 2010. OfSTED comments relate to lessons observed in French, German, Spanish ... etc!

Nativity scene based on words and phrases from the german Christmas carol "Stille Nacht". Also includes a little bit of practice of the date.

Mutliple choice exercise practising the present tense of the verb haben. On completion you will have a dialogue set in Middle Earth. May be suited to Friday afternoons.

A hand-out of useful phrases for beginners

Jumbled dialogue about arranging to go out. Students must re-arrange the statements and questions to re-create a dialogue that makes sense.

Text describing the situation in Germany with regards to young people's involvement with illicit substances and excessive drinking. The text is followed by questions in English, a find the phrase exercise, a manipulation exercise based on equivalent stats from the UK, and finally a challenging extended writing task. This was produced for an able KS4 group but could easily be upgraded to AS material.

Sequence of slides showing things that are valued highly in monetary terms. Ask students to speculate as to the value of each object, before clicking to reveal the value. Finally, ask them to tell you what they value that doesn't cost anything. Did this with Year 7 and Year 8, but I suspect it would work OK with any year group.

Interactive, self-marking gap-fill exercise based on a relatively accessible portrait of Usain Bolt. Will work on PC or IW.

Open-ended starter. Pupils have to suggest what the people or the animals in the images are thinking. Lots of possible correct answers for each picture. If you want you could set parameters eg 'Utilisez le futur proche.'

Interactive drag and drop exercise focussing on 10 key statistical facts about London 2012. Will work on PC or IW. Presented in Usain Bolt's colours!

(i) Extended text about the surface to air missiles deployed in East London for the Olympics, followed by comprehension questions in German, and (ii) a selection of opinions about the security measures, based on internet blogs, followed by a comprehension task, a speaking task, and two writing tasks, one pitched at AS level and one pitched at A2 level. (Typos spotted and now fixed.)
