Africa Year 2 unit about stories in a cultural setting. If you are looking for a new unit of work with excitement, culture, story, film, art links and research, - then look no further. This is a 3 week unit of work to link with a topic on Africa (or it can be taught stand alone). The planning included opportunities to learn an exemplar rewritten and condensed text using the ‘Masai and I’ story as inspiration. Children have the opportunity to imitate and innovate and then invent their own text. The resources included have excellent visuals to research from. Suitable links to real life Masai have been given as short film extracts to take notes about the cultural lifestyle, food, pets, schools of this tribe. This is an excellent and interesting unit to engage boys. Other links such as art have been made clear - whereby children learn about Kente cloth as worn by people in Kenya, create a traditional necklace and paint Masai dancers. As well as this, a guided reading text has been included in the unit to support reading for ‘working at’. There are also some additional resources called writing targets that can be edited to suit class needs. Enjoy and please leave a review.

First day back -Getting to know you activities. This resource is suitable to get to know your new class for any age group. Particularly suitably designed for KS2 although it can be edited for KS1. It also allows the teacher to introduce themselves to the pupils in a fun way. Teachers can play a variety of games to find out about their new class. Year 1 and 2 Maths - Money Adding the value of money in context of shopping. Use two money amounts that add up to ten first. Children to apply previous knowledge learned about number bonds to ten. then to add extra number. Extend to children recording the coins they would use to make this value. Greater depth children can use the smallest amount of coins. Subtraction word problems. use jottings to record answer. For more able children to record subtraction as difference between. start on the smallest number and count up.

2d shapes Exploring properties of shape with a fun shadow making activity. Children can learn about the properties of regular, simple 2d shapes as well being extended to naming and creating new irregular shapes. The powerpoint demonstrates how to uses torches to create shadow shapes, and differentiated activities allow for children to sort shapes, into different types of tables (e.g carol diagrams and ven diagrams). Relevant questions suitable for testing reasoning about shape can also be found in the powerpoint.

Year 2 tell the time by showing where the hour hand and the minutes hands. Children need to be confident in telling the time before they use this activity. They must understand that the hour hand is the small hand and the long hand is the minutes hand. The resource will enable them to count in fives around the clock and understand how to calculate for example 20 minutes past 9. A differentiated resource for all children to reach the expected standards (S) in maths for the new curriculum.

Year 2 Telling the time to the hour, half past, quarter past and quarter to. Children are encouraged to understand what each hand on the clock represents. They move onto telling the time an hour later, hour before, half an later and half an hour before. They look at word problems related to time and work out for example which clock is showing the time one hour after 10.30. They tick the clock that is showing a time in between 3 o’clock and 4 o’clock (e.g a clock face showing 3:15). The work on here is suitable for children working at the expected standard in Maths for year 2. The word problems have challenges for all ability groups including questions to challenge children working at greater depth.

Year 2 Writing unit The children can use this resources to research all about the London Olympic Venues and the Torch relay. Children can be given parts of the information to think of their own caption or headings. It will support them to write a non-fiction piece of writing. It can also be used as part of Geography to find out about in London. This unit was written to celebrate the arrival of the Olympics in 2012. However, it can still be used to compare changes in local area/London, how Olympics compare, or in general to read around Sports Day.

Year 2 Narrative Unit to inspire greater depth and mastery writing skills. An excellent bundle of resources suitable for year 2 and year 3. Includes 5 weeks of planning for English and 5 separate grammar exercises within context of the book to be taught alongside it. A cold writing task begins with writing a narrative(fable) of a fox. An exemplar text is provided (re-written in the past tense to imitate and innovate). There are also other opportunities for independent creative writing pieces integrated in the unit so that children can practice skills and rehearse them independently. Book talk and comprehension activities are also included. The language in the text is ambitious as well as appropriate for children to achieve the TAF statements for the year 2 curriculum. This unit can be adapted to suit lower KS2. Links to films and short clips provide opportunities for non-fiction writing e.g. Recount of how fires start in forests or bush lands. If children have previous experiences of writing instructions- they can apply this by writing 'How to mend a broken wing' instructions or make wings for Magpie to fly in DT. This document is to support teachers with feedback and marking. There is an example Powerpoint of good quality feedback and the pedagogy behind it - with children's work, next step marking, self assessment ideas and positive feedback language. There is also a bank of 'Next Step Marking' ideas that have been created to support teachers in their feedback to children that allow independence in revising their work. If marking is over explicit, then parts of the writing may be disqualified. It is highly recommended not to over mark and train children to understand teacher feedback e.g. Use varied sentences for effect on the reader/audience (means that the child has to use questions, commands, statements and exclamatory sentences). The detail in brackets is displayed in the classroom and given as verbal feedback to child. They then go away and improve their writing accordingly. This documents will give you more open bank of statements to use in your next steps (so moderators can't say the feedback was too explicit), and not use that piece of work as evidence for the child meeting the expected criteria (or above greater depth). Suitable for KS1, but can be easily adapted to Year 3 also. Hope you find it useful for your teams and use it to promote independent editing, revising and improvement of work. The Day the Crayons Quit is a working at the expected standard reading text for Year 2. This guided reading unit is a wonderful text to use to engage reluctant readers. This reading unit is designed to support the new English Reading Framework. It is suitable for comprehension with looking, clue and thinking questions and encourages children to talk through their answers using a reciprocal approach. The resources have been designed for children to read a few letters at a time and answer literal and inference based questions. There are also other links such as poetry about crayons so that children can experience a range of genres and respond to them. Teachers can allow children to read letters written in the style of the book so there is a 'I quit' letter from the teacher for children to respond to. This work can help towards moderation and assessment purposes and evidence at the end of the year. The unit was taught over 3 weeks and includes visuals for additional activities such as predict what the crayons are saying in speech bubbles.
