Your latest front page article exemplifies the misunderstanding of headteachers’ pay (“Top state leaders close in on pay of elite public school heads”, March 26). These apply to 120 jobs. There are about 24,000 schools in England and Wales. Heads’ pay is related to the size of the school. Most of the other 99.5 per cent of heads earn much less, for the same role. The argument that heads of smaller schools are less accountable or have fewer responsibilities doesn’t hold water, as the responsibilities are the same.
