The Multilingualism: Carers and Children Project in Sheffield, which offers French or Spanish to under-fives, their carers, parents, teachers and family members, has received a merit award for its innovative approach involving whole school communities.
CHEMISTRY OLYMPIAD.
Sarah Crisp, Paul Wright, Alexander Thom and Anoop Shah, all under 18, have won through the qualifying rounds of this challenge organised by the Royal Society of Chemistry at more than 350 schools throughout the UK. They are representing the UK in the finals of the 31st International Chemistry Olympiad being held in Bangkok, Thailand, July 4-11.
DESIGN A KITCHEN TOWEL.
Primary school children are invited to create a design for KittenSoft kitchen towels on the theme “Children’s Millennium”. Closing date: July 16. The three winning designs in age categories seven to nine and 10 to 11 will be used on limited-edition kitchen rolls from mid-September. Prizes are up to pound;1,000 of W H Smith vouchers for the winning schools and pound;100 for the pupil. Details: 0171 255 1100.

Robin Duckworth plans to apply for a PGCE primary course next year and to relocate to northern England, ideally Yorkshire. He hopes to work as a classroom assistant in that area for a year, specialising in mathematics and science.
