The Bard is gr8 - but so is text-speak

Eloquent and “correct” use of the English language is a powerful tool. However, Sugata Mitra provides an enlightened and open-minded view of text-speak (“Spelling? My phone takes care of that”, 2 August), and English teachers across the UK have been right to question why new linguistic modes such as this are ignored by the newly redrafted national curriculum. Our literary heritage dictates that Shakespeare should be studied, and rightly so. Text-speak functions as part of the rich linguistic tapestry of life. It deserves its small place in the classroom and the two need not be mutually exclusive.
