Chris Drage takes a look at a vocational post-16 ICT course

Looking for a non-academic, post-16 ICT course to run which is both popular and offers real vocational possibilities? Many Cisco Academies (school-based network training sponsored by the US-based company Cisco Systems) have found themselves with students who are inadequately prepared for the course. The IT 2020 A+ Computer Maintenance Course can be undertaken before, or alongside, the Cisco course. Being virtually an integrated learning system, it is delivered with computer-aided instruction and on-screen help.

However, that is an over-simplification as this generous course offers students three working modules. The first simulates computer problems on screen - set in a life-like context. You can do most things with the virtual computer that you can do with the real thing (except damage it!). This represents 30 hours’ work and 20 assignments.

The second module gives hands-on help with real equipment, tools and testing apparatus. Again, the students are guided by computer-assisted instruction. The LJ Group provides all the necessary hardware as part of the package.

The third module provides all the underlying theory and concepts: electronics, how computers work, networking delivered through on-screen and textual materials, student workbooks, etc.

Students rotate through these three elements of the course to receive a diet of theory and structured practical instruction within a mixed-media approach. A further six hours of A+ Exam preparation brings the total time for the course to 96 hours. The whole thing is delivered via an impressive management system using computer-based tracking and assessment of student performance. Successful students will gain a CompTIA certificate, an industry-recognised credential that certifies the competency of PC service specialists.

I am enthusiastic about the prospect of running LJ Group’s A+ course at John Kelly Technology Colleges as it will provide students with the much needed concepts, skills and knowledge to undertake Cisco networking. In addition, it should offer what is a valuable vocational qualification, and we can make it self-funding by offering it to the local community and businesses.
