The Bicycle Thief (Le Voleur de bicyclette), Oliver Twist, and Kes are among the British and European films, classics and animated features being screened for schools at Cine Lumi re, Institut Francais, 17 Queensberry Place, South Kensington, London SW7.
Six films are screened a week with those on Wednesday and Saturday open to the public and the rest to school parties and the public. The original version of all films is shown with English subtitles where appropriate. All age groups are catered for from small children up to sixth formers. Prices pound;2 per person in a school group, teachers free.

Language courses
From February 2
Courses being run by the National Centre for Languages and Literacy at Reading University include poetry reading, poetry writing at KS1 and 2, February 2; spotlight on children’s authors, Years 56, February 3; planning and provision for cross-curricular literacy, March 16; reading for transition from primary to secondary, April 20; teaching spelling from phonics to orthography, April 27. Darwin day

How dangerous was Darwin’s science? What role did he give God? Is there any truth in the story of his death bed conversion? Dr James Moore will cover these topics in his talk, “Darwin: a devil’s chaplain?” at the London School of Economics’ interdisciplinary institute of management, Aldwych, London WC2, 6.30pm. Royal Society grants
Teachers, scientists or engineers planning to work in partnership on a science project with pupils aged five to 16 are invited to apply by February 11 for a grant of up to pound;2,500. The funds can be used to pay for specialist equipment, supply cover, travel and other expenses.
