THE TEACHER Supply and Retention in London Project (see left) is a major investigation supported by the Teacher Training Agency and conducted by the University of North London in partnership with six London local education authorities.
Between November 1998 and February 1999 we conducted a census of teachers in the six boroughs: the response represents a one-third sample of all teachers employed in county, denominational and grant-maintained schools and education authority peripatetic units.
This census collected a raft of data on the training, career histories and socio-demographics of respondents.
We included questions about the future intentions of the teachers - such as whether they were planning to move out of London over the next five years, or in the longer term.
We have therefore been able to predict the recruitment necessary to maintain a stable maths teaching force.
From April 2000, the project will be extending its work to other authorities - both within and beyond London - on a subscription basis.
