Making More of Maths is the theme of the Association of Teachers of Mathematics’ 2003 conference being held at Bath University, April 14-17. Speakers include Simon Singh, author of Fermat’s Last Theorem and The Code Book, on the Enigma Machine and science and art of cryptography. One special feature is a workshop area containing tessellating tiles, crates of cubes, gallons of glue and reams of paper and card. Make a model, solve a puzzle, play a game or simply talk and think.

The Mathematical Association’s 2003 conference will be held at the University of East Anglia, April 12-15, on the theme Maths Matters. Speakers include Johnny Ball, the presenter who popularises maths through satires, drama and songs; Rob Eastaway, mathematical writer and performer; and Susan Howson, award-winning mathematician. Special themes will be women in maths, maths for work, maths in schools and maths at play.

Training provider Stands for Education is running a practical day for non-specialists on Teaching KS3 maths. Venues: London (September 26; October 16); Leeds (October 2); Birmingham (October 10). Also coming up is Successfully delivering the handling data component of GCSE maths: a focus on planning, teaching and assessment particularly emphasising coursework.
